Chapter 7 - THE VERDICTThe Price of CrueltyThe day of sentencing arrived six weeks later.

The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity with journalists, legal observers, and members of the public who had followed the case from the beginning.

Ethan and Margaret sat at opposite ends of the defense table, separated by two armed bailiffs. They refused to look at each other. The bond of malice that had united them in trying to destroy my life was completely shattered.

Judge Helen Thorne, a stern woman known for her uncompromising stance on domestic abuse and financial corruption, took her seat on the bench.

“Ethan Vance,” Judge Thorne began, her eyes fixed on my ex-husband. “You systematically abused, gaslighted, poisoned, and attempted to murder the woman who trusted you with her life. You did so out of unadulterated financial greed and narcissism. You showed no remorse until you realized you were caught.”

She paused, adjusting her glasses.

“On the counts of attempted murder in the first degree, conspiracy to commit murder, illegal distribution of controlled toxic substances, and federal financial fraud, I sentence you to fifty-five years in state penitentiary, without the possibility of parole for thirty-five years.”

Ethan collapsed back into his chair, staring blankly at the ceiling as if his soul had been ripped from his body.

Judge Thorne then turned her gaze toward Margaret Vance.

“Margaret Vance,” the judge’s voice grew even colder. “You took a solemn oath as a mother and a human being, yet you actively participated in the systematic poisoning of your daughter-in-law, and ultimately executed an act of horrific, barbaric violence by scalding her with boiling oil. Your attempts to play the victim in this courtroom are insulting to the justice system.”

Margaret began to weep loudly, shaking her head. “Please, Your Honor... I’m old... I’ll die in there...”

“That,” Judge Thorne replied sharply, “is a consequence of your own evil choices. On the counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, attempted murder, and criminal conspiracy, I sentence you to forty years in maximum-security prison.”

As the bailiffs stepped forward to lead them away in chains, Margaret let out a piercing shriek, clutching at the table before being pulled away. Ethan remained motionless, being dragged like a corpse out of the courtroom doors.

Justice had been served. But my story was far from over.
