On the third day of the preliminary hearing, Margaret took the witness stand in a desperate bid to save herself. Dressed in standard blue prison garments, her hair grey and unkempt, she broke down in tears before the judge.
“My son is a monster!” Margaret cried out, pointing a trembling finger at Ethan, who sat at the defense table. “He forced me to do it! He told me that if I didn't help him get rid of Sarah, he would put me in a state-run nursing home and leave me to die! He bought the poison! He made the oil hot!”
Ethan jumped out of his chair, his face contorted in absolute rage. “You lying old hag!” he screamed, breaking past his attorney. “You were the one who suggested it! You said she was worth more dead than alive! You pushed the pot onto her!”
“Order in the court!” the judge slammed his gavel repeatedly. “Bailiffs, control the defendants!”
Three guards tackled Ethan to the floor as he continued to scream curses at his mother, while Margaret cowered in the witness box, sobbing hysterically for the cameras.
The entire courtroom was stunned into silence by the sheer toxicity of their mutual destruction.
In the gallery, sitting beside Arthur Vance and Rachel, I watched the spectacle unfold. There was no joy in watching them tear each other apart—only a deep, profound sense of relief that the delusion was finally over.
