Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING IN COURTThree months later, the high-security federal courtroom in downtown was packed to capacity. The trial of Richard Vance had become front-page news across the state, exposing the dark, rotten underbelly of suburban wealth and corporate corruption.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery, wearing a brand-new, bright yellow dress with a cheerful white ribbon in her hair, was Mia.

She wasn't shivering anymore. She sat upright, holding a small plush toy version of a pitbull tightly in her lap. Next to her sat Big Mike—dressed in a clean, dark suit instead of his usual leather vest—acting as her official court-appointed guardian ad litem under a special emergency petition filed by the syndicate’s legal team.

In the witness box, forensic expert Jax was walking the jury through the irrefutable digital audit trails, displaying the Cayman Island shell accounts, the forged trust documents, and the high-definition security camera footage of the night Richard abused both the child and her puppy.

Across the courtroom, sitting at the defense table, Richard looked like a ghost of his former self. His hair was unkempt, his tailored suit hung loosely off his shrunken frame, and his high-priced defense attorneys looked thoroughly defeated, sitting silently through the presentation of evidence without a single objection left to make.

When the jury foreman finally stood up to read the verdict, the courtroom fell into absolute, breathless silence.

“On all counts of federal wire fraud, grand larceny, interstate financial embezzlement, child endangerment, and felony animal abuse,” the foreman announced clearly, “we find the defendant, Richard Vance, guilty.”

A collective sigh of relief washed over the gallery.

Judge Harrison, an austere woman with decades on the bench, looked down sternly from her elevated podium, her eyes fixing directly on Richard.

“Mr. Vance, your crimes represent a profound betrayal of trust, the calculated exploitation of an innocent child, and acts of staggering cowardice,” Judge Harrison stated coldly. “You sought to destroy the most vulnerable life in your care for personal financial gain. For these heinous offenses, I sentence you to forty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole, followed by full asset forfeiture and restitution.”

The gavel slammed down with a resounding crack that echoed like thunder through the courtroom.

Richard dropped his head into his hands, sobbing weakly as two federal marshals stepped up behind him, slapped heavy steel cuffs back onto his wrists, and led him away through the side exit toward a permanent concrete cell.
