Chapter 2 - THE SNARE OF THE PREDATOR

The cold air of the kitchen seemed to solidify around Valeria, turning the very oxygen in her lungs to ice. She stood frozen in the shadow of the hallway, her bare feet pressing against the expensive hardwood floors she had paid for with years of grueling overtime, skipped meals, and absolute dedication.

Doña Leticia scoffed, the sound sharp and dismissive in the quiet house. She reached out and patted Mateo’s hand with an eerie, clinical affection. "What will you tell her? You tell her what any devoted husband tells his naive wife, Mateo. You tell her it’s an insurance policy. A joint protection clause for your future children. You look her in the eye, you smile, and you tell her you are doing this to take care of her."

"But mother," Mateo stammered, his fingers twitching against the heavy manila envelope. "The notary... he said if she finds out it's a fraudulent title transfer disguised as a debt consolidation loan, she could sue us. She could destroy us. She thinks we are living in a rented place that my family helps subsidize! She doesn't know I found her real estate deed in her locked desk last month."

Valeria’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. He found the deed. The realization cut through her like a jagged blade. Mateo hadn't married her out of love. He had snooped through her private belongings before the wedding, discovered that a 26-year-old marketing executive owned a multi-million-peso luxury apartment in the most prestigious zone of Roma Norte, and had orchestrated this entire marriage as a corporate hostile takeover.

"She won't find out," Doña Leticia hissed, her porcelain smile completely gone, replaced by the calculating scowl of a seasoned grifter. "Valeria is isolated. Her parents are gone, her brother is abroad, and she thinks of me as her second mother. Tomorrow morning, when she is rushing to catch her flight for her business trip to Guadalajara, you will present the papers. She will sign them in a rush. By the time she returns on Friday, this apartment will legally belong to the 'Martínez Family Trust'—which is under my name. And if she complains later? We will remind her that a good wife shares everything with her husband's family. Now, go to bed before she wakes up."

Valeria backed away slowly, her movements purely instinctual. She slipped into the guest bedroom down the hall rather than their shared master bed, her mind spinning at a thousand miles per hour. The sheer magnitude of the betrayal was staggering. The man who swore to protect her, who kissed her forehead every morning, was actively plotting with his mother to steal her life's work.

As she lay in the dark, the tears she expected didn't come. Instead, a cold, burning rage ignited deep within her soul. They wanted a naive, love-struck girl? She would play the part perfectly. But they had no idea that the prey they were trying to corner was about to turn the hunters into the hunted.
