Chapter 4 - THE SPIDER’S WEB

Valeria didn't go to Guadalajara.
The moment she left the building, she called her company’s CEO—a close personal mentor—and requested immediate emergency leave, which was granted without question. She checked into a boutique hotel just three blocks away from her own apartment, operating under her maiden name.
Her first call was to Licenciado Ernesto Silva, a ruthless, top-tier real estate and criminal defense attorney who had helped her secure the apartment years ago. Within two hours, they were sitting in a private room at a high-end cafe.
When Valeria explained the situation and showed him the hidden audio recording she had captured on her phone during the midnight kitchen meeting, Silva’s expression turned grim.
"This is not just marital deceit, Valeria. This is organized corporate fraud, forgery of notary seals, and attempted grand larceny," Silva said, adjusting his glasses. "If they attempt to file this document with the public registry, they are committing a federal crime. But if we stop them now, they will only get a slap on the wrist. They will claim it was a misunderstanding."
Valeria leaned forward, her eyes cold as flint. "I don't want them stopped, Ernesto. I want them to walk straight into the trap. I want them to fully commit the crime. What happens if they successfully register the fake deed?"
Silva smiled slowly, a dangerous glint in his eye. "If they register it, the crime is fully consummated. The moment money or property changes hands based on a fraudulent instrument, it becomes an unbailable felony in this jurisdiction. But Valeria... to catch them completely, we need to let them think they have won. We need to let them start spending the money they think they’ve stolen."
"They won't just stop at the apartment," Valeria murmured, remembering Leticia’s questions about her savings. "They think I have a massive inheritance coming from my late grandmother's estate next week. They are going to try to liquidate my accounts."
"Then we give them the rope to hang themselves," Silva agreed.
Over the next forty-eight hours, Valeria worked around the clock with Silva and a private digital investigator. They discovered that Mateo wasn't the successful independent financial consultant he claimed to be. He was drowning in millions of pesos of gambling debt to shady underground casinos in Polanco. His mother, Leticia, had already lost her own home to foreclosures and was living off a web of credit card fraud and high-society scams.
They needed Valeria’s apartment to post as collateral for a massive consolidation loan to save Mateo from dangerous creditors.
