Chapter 3 - THE GUADALAJARA BAIT

The next morning, the apartment was filled with the rich aroma of fresh coffee and vanilla. Mateo was standing by the quartz island, dressed in a soft cashmere sweater, looking every bit the doting, progressive husband. Doña Leticia was already there, meticulously arranging a basket of sweet pastries.
"Good morning, my love," Mateo beamed, walking over to kiss Valeria’s cheek. Valeria forced every muscle in her face to relax, offering him a warm, bright smile despite the acid rising in her throat.
"You look tired, sweetie. Did you sleep well?" Doña Leticia asked, her eyes scanning Valeria’s face like a hawk looking for a crack in the armor.
"Just a little anxious about the Guadalajara presentation, Doña Leticia," Valeria replied smoothly, pouring herself a cup of coffee. "I barely slept."
"Oh, you work too hard, darling," Leticia said, patting her arm. "But don't worry, Mateo is here to handle the heavy burdens. Speaking of which, Mateo, didn't you have that routine bank paperwork for the apartment insurance? The deadline is today, isn't it?"
Mateo feigned sudden realization, snapping his fingers. "Oh! That's right! Thank god you reminded me, Mom. Vale, completely slipped my mind. The bank needs us to sign the standard residency protection forms since we're newlyweds renting in this sector. It's just a formality to keep our rental rates locked in."
He pulled the heavy document out of his briefcase. Valeria’s eyes darted to the pages. It was exactly as she had seen the night before, but the top page had been replaced with a deceptively worded "Tenant Insurance and Security Declaration." However, she knew that beneath that first page lay the fraudulent title transfer documents.
"Can I read it over when I get back on Friday, Mateo? My Uber to the airport is outside," Valeria said, pretending to check her phone frantically.
"It only takes a second, love," Mateo insisted, his voice dropping into a smooth, manipulative register. He placed a heavy pen in her hand. "If we don't sign it now, the bank will penalize us, and I don't want to stress you out while you're away. Just sign on the X right here."
Valeria looked at the pen, then at Mateo’s pleading eyes, and finally at Doña Leticia, who was leaning forward, her breath practically catching in her throat.
Valeria smiled. "Of course, absolute trust, right?"
She took the pen and scribbled a signature. But she didn't sign her actual legal signature. Instead, she used a stylized version of her maiden name that she had legally changed two years ago—a signature that would instantly flag the document as invalid upon forensic inspection, yet looked authentic enough to the untrained eye.
Mateo practically snatched the paper back, his face flushing with a mixture of relief and dark triumph. "Perfect! Have a safe flight, my beautiful wife. I'll take care of everything here."

As Valeria rolled her suitcase out the door, she caught Doña Leticia’s reflection in the hallway mirror. The older woman was silently mouthing the words: It's ours.
Valeria smiled to herself as the elevator doors closed. Let the games begin.
