Chapter 6 - THE TRAP SNAPS SHUT

Before Mateo or Leticia could react, Valeria pulled out her phone and pressed a single button on a live-streaming application.
"Say hello to the internet, Doña Leticia," Valeria said, holding the phone up. "And more importantly, say hello to the three undercover officers waiting in the stairwell."
Suddenly, the heavy oak front door was slammed open. Licenciado Ernesto Silva walked in, followed by two armed federal investigators and a senior bank fraud specialist.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Leticia shrieked, dropping her champagne glass, which shattered across the floor. "Get out of my house!"
"Actually, Doña Leticia, it is still Valeria's house," Silva said, presenting a folder of legal documents. "The paperwork your son filed at the registry office utilized a signature that Valeria had legally retired years ago, making the document instantly flagged for forensic fraud. Furthermore, we have 72 hours of continuous high-definition audio and video surveillance of you both planning this grand larceny, along with the digital signatures you attempted to forge for her grandmother's inheritance."
Mateo’s face turned completely white. He looked at his mother, then at the police officers who were already pulling out handcuffs. "Vale... please... it was my mother's idea! She forced me! I owe people money, they were going to kill me!" he screamed, dropping to his knees, completely losing his composure.
"Oh, shut up, you coward!" Leticia roared at her son, her sophisticated facade shattering into ugly, desperate rage. She glared at Valeria with pure hatred. "You miserable little bitch! You think you've won? I'll drag your name through every court in this country!"

"You can try, Leticia," Valeria said, looking down at the woman who had tried to ruin her life. "But the bank fraud specialist here has already frozen all your accounts. And those gambling creditors Mateo owes? I took the liberty of sending them an anonymous tip this morning letting them know that the 'Martínez Family Trust' is completely bankrupt and fraudulent. They are currently waiting outside the building."
Mateo let out a strangled cry of pure terror as the reality of his situation crashed down on him. The police grabbed his arms, pulling him up and slapping the cold steel of handcuffs onto his wrists. Leticia was next, her screams of fury echoing through the elegant hallways as she was dragged out in front of all the wealthy neighbors she had spent her life trying to impress.
