Chapter 5 - THE CELEBRATION OF THIEVES

On Friday evening, Valeria returned to the apartment, pretending to be exhausted from her trip. The moment she walked through the door, she noticed a change. The lock had been changed, and she had to ring the bell.

Mateo opened the door, wearing a silk robe that belonged to Valeria's late father. He didn't rush to hug her. His posture was arrogant, relaxed, almost dismissive.

"Oh, you're back," he said casually, stepping aside.

Inside, the apartment was completely altered. Valeria’s custom artwork had been taken down, replaced by tacky, gold-framed portraits of Doña Leticia’s ancestors. Leticia herself was sitting on the velvet sofa, sipping a glass of expensive champagne that Valeria had been saving for her own anniversary.

"What is going on here?" Valeria asked, playing the confused, victimized wife perfectly. "Why are my things moved? And why did the lock change?"

Doña Leticia stood up, holding her champagne glass with an air of absolute authority. "Well, Valeria, it’s time we face reality. A marriage cannot survive on secrets. We know this apartment doesn't belong to a landlord. We know it belonged to you."

Valeria feigned absolute shock, dropping her suitcase. "How... how did you find out?"

Mateo laughed, walking over to stand beside his mother. "Did you really think you could hide a multi-million-peso asset from me? But don't worry, darling. As your husband, I took the liberty of correcting your administrative mistakes. You see, women are far too emotional to manage high-value real estate. So, using the power of attorney and the asset transfer documents you signed on Tuesday, this apartment now belongs to my mother’s family trust."

"You... you stole my home?" Valeria gasped, squeezing out a highly rehearsed tear.

"Stole? What a harsh word," Leticia purred, taking a slow sip of her drink. "We simply integrated it into the family. Furthermore, we know about the five million pesos your grandmother left you in her offshore trust. We've already filed the paperwork with the bank using your signature cards to transfer those funds into our joint account tomorrow morning to pay off Mateo's... logistical debts."

Mateo stepped closer, his voice turning cold and threatening. "You have two choices, Valeria. You stay here, play the quiet, obedient housewife, and let us manage the finances. Or you can leave with nothing but the clothes on your back. If you try to fight us, the documents show you willingly gifted this property to us. No judge will ever believe you."

Valeria looked down, her shoulders shaking. Mateo and Leticia exchanged a look of smug, venomous triumph. They truly believed they had executed the perfect crime.

Slowly, Valeria lifted her head. The tears were completely gone. In their place was a terrifying, serene smile.

"You're right, Mateo," Valeria said softly, reaching into her coat pocket. "No judge will believe me. But they will definitely believe the federal police."
