Chapter 7 - THE TWIST ENDING (THE ULTIMATE REVENGE)

Three months later.
The high-society circles of Mexico City were still reeling from the scandalous downfall of the Martínez family. Mateo and Doña Leticia were currently awaiting trial in a high-security federal penitentiary, facing charges of grand larceny, forgery, and organized fraud with a guaranteed sentence of fifteen to twenty years without the possibility of bail.
Valeria stood by the window of her Roma Norte apartment, holding a fresh cup of coffee. The tacky ancestral portraits were gone, the locks had been upgraded to military-grade biometric security, and the space felt peaceful once again.
Her attorney, Ernesto Silva, walked into the living room, carrying a final set of legal documents.
"Well, Valeria, it’s officially over. The marriage has been completely annulled due to criminal fraud. It's as if you were never married to him," Silva said, handing her a pen. "But there is one final piece of business. The courts have finished liquidating the remaining hidden assets of the Martínez estate to pay off their legal penalties."
Valeria signed the final paper with her true, legal signature. She smiled. "And what did they find?"
Silva chuckled, a look of profound admiration on his face. "It turns out Doña Leticia actually did own one legitimate asset that she had hidden from her own son's creditors. A massive, historic colonial estate in the heart of San Miguel de Allende, valued at over twenty-five million pesos. Because they attempted to defraud you, the judge has officially awarded the entire estate to you as punitive damages for emotional distress and attempted theft."
Valeria looked out over the beautiful skyline of Mexico City, feeling the immense weight of the past few months finally lift from her shoulders.

Mateo and his mother had married her to steal her apartment and strip her of her wealth. But through her silence, her brilliance, and her absolute refusal to be a victim, she hadn't just saved her own home...
She had taken theirs.
