Chapter 2 - The Glass ThroneUpstairs, the VIP ballroom was a symphony of crystal chandeliers, clinking champagne flutes, and hollow laughter. At the center of the room stood Dominic, looking every bit the self-made billionaire in a bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo. Hanging onto his arm was Cynthia, the daughter of a wealthy real estate magnate whose family had recently pumped five million dollars into Dominic’s failing logistics expansion.

Cynthia laughed airily, leaning her head against Dominic’s shoulder. "Oh, Dom, you’re just too brilliant. Securing the Horizon contract by yourself? You're a genius."

Dominic puffed out his chest, adjusting his cufflinks with a smug grin. "Hard work and vision, Cynthia. That’s all it takes. People think success is handed to them, but I built this empire from the dirt up. No handouts. Just pure grit."

Just a few feet away, Cynthia’s father, old man Harrison, raised his glass. "To the self-made king of tech logistics. May your enemies choke on your dust!"

A chorus of sycophantic laughter rippled through the inner circle. Dominic beamed, basking in the adoration. He had completely forgotten the cramped apartment he shared with Viv six years ago. He had erased the late nights when Viv sat at the kitchen table, secretly routing her family's venture capital funds into his accounts under anonymous shell corporations just to keep his bankrupt startup afloat. In Dominic’s mind, he was a titan who had slayed dragons all by himself.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the end of the ballroom chimed.

The low murmur of conversation died down. Heads turned.

There stood Viv, her plain wool coat hanging loosely over her shoulders, her dark hair falling in natural waves down her back. Holding her hand was six-year-old Sophia, proudly holding up a crooked paper necklace that read Best Daddy Ever.

Dominic choked on his champagne. The glass slipped from his fingers, shattering into a thousand glittering pieces against the imported Italian marble.

"Vivian?" Dominic whispered, the blood draining entirely from his face.

Cynthia frowned, her eyes narrowing as she looked from Viv to Dominic. "Dom? Who is this peasant? And why is she calling you... wait, why is she looking at you like that?"

Dominic took a panicked step backward, his polished shoes crunching on the glass. "Cynthia, honey, it’s... it’s not what you think. She’s... she’s just a crazy fan. A stalker from my past!"

Viv finally spoke, her voice cutting through the silent ballroom like a razor blade.

"A stalker, Dominic?" Viv stepped forward, her footsteps echoing in the cavernous room. "Is that what you call the woman who spent five years washing your shirts while you cried over failing spreadsheets? Is that what you call your wife?"

The room erupted into absolute chaos. Gasps echoed from every corner. Flashbulbs from social media influencers caught the scene in real-time.

Cynthia’s face turned the color of ash. She spun around to face Dominic, her voice trembling with fury. "Wife?! You told me you were divorced! You told me your ex died years ago!"

"Cynthia, listen to me!" Dominic stammered, sweating profusely under the blazing lights. He lunged toward Viv, his expression contorted with sheer panic and rage. "Are you out of your mind?! Security! Get these lunatics out of here right now! She’s ruined my life!"

Before security could even twitch, the massive glass doors at the back blew open. A gale-force wind swept rain into the foyer, followed by the crisp, heavy footsteps of six men in identical dark suits. At the front of the formation walked Victor Sterling, his silver-threaded tie gleaming, his eyes dead and unfeeling as a shark's.

Victor scanned the room, spotted Dominic cowering near the bar, and pulled a sleek black smartphone from his pocket.

He didn't yell. He didn't have to.

"It's done," Victor spoke into the phone, his voice carrying clearly across the silent hall. "Liquidate all assets, call in every outstanding note, and freeze their operating accounts. Dominic Sterling doesn't exist anymore."
