Chapter 7 - The Trial of the CenturyTwo months later, the federal courthouse downtown was surrounded by a sea of reporters, camera crews, and flashing lights.

The trial of United States v. Dominic Sterling & Chloe Miller had captured the nation's attention. What started as a local corporate scandal quickly unraveled into a massive federal investigation into wire fraud, tax evasion, corporate espionage, and systemic embezzlement.
Inside Courtroom 402, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Dominic sat at the defense table, looking unrecognizable. The tailored Tom Ford tuxedos were gone, replaced scratchy orange jumpsuit. His hair was unkempt, his face hollowed out by stress and despair. He looked ten years older, a broken shell of the arrogant man who had lorded over his employees just weeks prior.
Sitting beside him was Chloe, who had spent the last two months sobbing in her cell and blaming Dominic for ruining her career and her life. They hadn't spoken a single word to each other since the night of the gala.
At the prosecution table stood Julian Sterling, serving as special counsel for the federal trade commission. His demeanor was cold, clinical, and utterly devastating.
"Your Honor," Julian stated, his voice echoing cleanly through the wood-paneled courtroom. "The defense would have this court believe that Mr. Sterling was a self-made visionary who fell victim to unfortunate market conditions. However, the financial records tell a very different story."
Julian pressed a button on his remote.
A massive projector screen behind the judge lit up, displaying a complex, interconnected web of shell corporations, offshore bank accounts, and forged ledger entries.
"For the past five years," Julian continued, pacing slowly in front of the jury box, "every single profitable contract secured by Sterling Logistics was not won through merit or innovation. It was propped up by tens of millions of dollars in illicitly funneled venture capital—funds illegally diverted from Sterling Holdings under false pretenses, orchestrated by Mr. Sterling and his co-conspirator, Ms. Miller."
Dominic buried his face in his cuffed hands, his shoulders shaking with silent sobs. He finally realized the sheer magnitude of his delusion. He hadn't built an empire at all. He had been a toddler playing in a sandbox built by the very family he had tried so hard to run away from.
The judge adjusted his glasses, reviewing the thick stack of financial documents before him.
"Mr. Sterling," the judge said gravely. "Do you have anything to say before sentencing is handed down?"
Dominic slowly stood up, his chains rattling ominously in the quiet room. He looked across the courtroom, his eyes searching the public gallery in a desperate, pathetic bid for forgiveness.
He didn't find Viv. She was sitting miles away in the peaceful gardens of the Sterling estate, teaching Sophia how to plant sunflowers.
Instead, Dominic found only empty seats and cameras recording his absolute humiliation.

"I... I built it all on a lie," Dominic whispered, his voice cracking into a dry rasp. "I wanted to be a man of my own. But I was just a coward wearing borrowed clothes."
The judge didn't soften. "Hubris is a dangerous master, Mr. Sterling. But fraud is a federal crime."
