Chapter 11 - THE GHOST IN THE SHADOWS

Six months after Julian Cross was dragged out of the Apex Gala in handcuffs, the world believed the drama was over. The media celebrated my return to Vance International as a story of quiet resilience. But as I sat in the executive suite of our Chicago headquarters, staring at an encrypted hard drive recovered from Julian’s seized safe-deposit box, I realized we had only severed the snake's tail.

The drive contained a series of anonymous emails sent from an encrypted Swiss server under the alias Project Nemesis.

Every instruction Julian had followed over four years—how to approach me in Boston, how to slowly isolate me from my father’s network, how to erode my self-esteem until I stopped wearing my luxury clothes—had been mapped out by someone else. Julian was too arrogant and impatient to craft a multi-year psychological operation. He was merely an ambitious fool being pulled by gold threads.

"Clarissa," my father said, walking into my office with Richard Sterling close behind. "The forensic cyber team finally cracked the final layer of the drive's encryption."

"Who was funding him, Dad?" I asked, keeping my gaze fixed on the glowing screen.

Richard stepped forward, placing a thick black folder on my desk. "It wasn't an internal rival within Vance International. It was Victor Thorne."

My hands turned cold.

Victor Thorne was the founder of Thorne Capital—a shadowy European investment firm notorious for hostile takeovers, political extortion, and bankrupting legacy conglomerates. He was a man who operated in the deep twilight of global finance, buying up distressed debt and destroying families from behind bulletproof glass in Geneva.

"Thorne wanted Vance International's maritime trade routes," Richard explained. "He knew your father would never sell. So he sought to break the family from the inside. If Julian had successfully forced you to sign over your spousal trust, Thorne would have gained a 20% voting block in Vance International—enough to trigger a forced board restructuring."

I closed the folder with a sharp snap.

Julian hadn't just mistreated me out of vanity; he was a hired mercenary who had agreed to destroy my life for a cut of my father's empire.

"Where is Victor Thorne right now?" I asked calmly.

"He's hosting the Annual Global Maritime Summit in Monaco next week," Arthur replied, his eyes dark with ancient fury. "He believes he’s safe behind his sovereign diplomatic immunity and European banking laws."

I stood up, adjusting the cuffs of my bespoke blazer. "Then it's time we take a trip to Monaco."
