Chapter 9 - THE ASHES OF APEX

By 5:00 AM, the first rays of sunrise began to streak across the skyline of Shaker Heights.

I stood on the tarmac at the private airfield, watching the sunrise paint the clouds in brilliant shades of gold, rose, and orange. Beside me stood my father, holding two cups of fresh coffee.

He handed one to me. "How do you feel, my girl?"

I took a sip, feeling the warmth spread through my chest. For the first time in three years, the heavy, crushing weight on my shoulders was gone. I wasn't hiding. I wasn't shrinking. I wasn't trying to make myself smaller to fit into a fragile man’s small world.

"I feel like myself again, Dad," I said softly.

Behind us, a black sedan pulled up. Richard Sterling stepped out, holding a morning newspaper. The headline on the front page, printed in bold black ink, read:

"APEX GROUP DECLARES BANKRUPTCY: CEO ARRESTED IN $100M FEDERAL FRAUD CONSPIRACY."

Below the headline was a photo of Julian Cross being led away in handcuffs, his face covered in shadow, looking broken, ruined, and defeated. A small side article reported that Chloe Miller’s father had been stripped of his business licenses, and their family estate was put up for public auction to satisfy back taxes.

Julian Cross thought he was playing a game of chess with a helpless piece. He never realized that the woman sitting quietly in the corner was the one holding the entire board.

"The jet is ready, Miss Vance," the pilot announced, stepping down the stairs of the Gulfstream G650.

I turned back one last time to look at the city in the distance. The tall glass tower of Apex Group, which Julian had bragged about for years, was dark—its lights turned off forever.
