Chapter 8 - THE SHOCKING TWIST

As we prepared to leave the mansion for the airport, Richard Sterling approached my father and me with a tablet in his hand, his expression unusually grave.
"Mr. Vance, Miss Vance... there’s something else," Richard said, tapping the screen. "When we audited Julian’s personal servers during the asset seizure, we found encrypted correspondence between him and an offshore entity dated four years ago."
I frowned. "Four years ago? That was before I even met Julian."
"Precisely," Richard said. "Julian didn't meet you by accident at that library in Boston, Clarissa. He knew exactly who you were."
My heart skipped a beat. "What?"
Arthur’s eyes narrowed into slits of deadly focus. "Explain, Sterling."
"Four years ago, Julian Cross was working as a junior analyst at a firm that handled Vance International's regional filings," Richard explained. "He discovered a redacted file revealing that Arthur Vance had a daughter living under an alias to avoid media attention. Julian intentionally orchestrated that 'accidental' meeting at the library. He targeted Clarissa, intending to marry her, isolate her from her family, break her self-esteem so she would never leave him, and eventually claim her inheritance through a spousal trust."
I stood frozen in the dim light of the foyer.
All those years... all those moments where I thought he was just a arrogant man who had lost his way... it was all a calculated, predatory plot. He hadn't fallen out of love with me; he had been trying to break my spirit from day one so he could steal my father's legacy.
"He didn't take Chloe to the gala because he was tired of me," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow. "He took her because he thought he had finally secured enough independent backing from Vance International's merger to dump me and keep the money he stole."
Arthur’s face turned into a mask of pure, absolute vengeance.

"Sterling," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "Call the District Attorney. I don't just want Julian Cross in prison for tax fraud. I want him prosecuted for corporate espionage, conspiracy, and grand larceny. Make sure he never sees the light of day again."
"Already done, sir," Sterling replied. "And because he used federal wire systems to execute his plan, the Department of Justice has just elevated the charges to federal racketeering. Julian Cross is facing thirty years in a maximum-security facility."
