Chapter 15

Autumn bled slowly into winter as the first snowflakes began to blanket Central Park. The Moretti estate was no longer a fortress of silence; it echoed with the sound of laughter, footsteps, and occasionally, Mia chasing a mechanical toy car down the marble halls.

Antonio had officially integrated Elena into the management of the household, though it quickly became clear to everyone except the two of them that her role extended far beyond housekeeping.

One evening, after Mia had finally fallen asleep upstairs, Antonio and Elena sat by the grand fireplace in the study. A crackling fire cast a warm, amber glow across the dark wood paneling.

“I found something else in my father’s old blueprints last week,” Elena said quietly, staring into the flames. “A note he left behind, detailing how he planned to help you restructure the legitimate shipping companies away from the family’s old vices.”

Antonio looked over at her, his expression softening. “Daniel was a better man than this city deserved. I intend to honor his work. Every single shipping line we own is going 100% legitimate by the end of next year.”

Elena turned her head, looking deep into his dark eyes. “You’re changing everything, Antonio.”

“Only the parts that were already broken,” he replied, reaching across the space between them to gently brush a stray lock of hair from her face.
