The Moretti estate had undergone a complete physical and symbolic transformation; the iron security gates were gone, replaced by sprawling gardens open to the neighborhood children, and the dark, forbidding drapes had been permanently replaced with light linen curtains that let the golden sunlight pour into every single corner.
Inside the bright, airy kitchen, four-year-old Mia was standing on a wooden stepstool, enthusiastically frosting a birthday cake under Rosa’s watchful, laughing eye.
Down the grand hallway, in the newly remodeled executive study, Antonio Moretti sat behind his mahogany desk. But the ledgers of blood, debt, and territorial disputes were gone. In their place lay blueprints for community youth centers, urban renewal projects, and legitimate maritime logistics contracts.
The door opened softly, and Elena walked in, carrying a fresh cup of coffee and a morning newspaper bearing headlines about the Moretti Foundation’s massive charitable donations to Queens development.
She placed the cup on the desk and leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss against his cheek.
“You have a meeting with the city planning commissioner in twenty minutes,” Elena reminded him with a playful smile.
