Chapter 20

The transformation of Antonio Moretti from the most feared mafia boss in New York into a pillar of the community became the stuff of legend across Manhattan. But inside the walls of the estate on Seventy-Second Street, legends didn't matter.

Life did.

On a warm Saturday afternoon in late May, the grand courtyard was filled with the sound of music, laughter, and chatter. Friends, business partners, and neighborhood families gathered beneath sprawling white tents to celebrate a new beginning.

Antonio stood near the garden fountain, wearing a light linen suit, watching little Mia chase a golden retriever across the manicured lawn. The red-and-white plastic stethoscope still sat on a bookshelf in his study—not as a reminder of pain, but as a quiet reminder of the tiny miracle that had walked through his door and broken open a frozen heart.

Elena walked up beside him, handing him a glass of sparkling cider. She leaned her head against his shoulder as they watched the sun begin its slow descent behind the city skyline, painting the clouds in shades of amber and gold.

“Penny for your thoughts, Mr. Moretti?” she teased softly.

Antonio wrapped his arm securely around her waist, pulling her close against his side as he watched the brilliant light reflect across the water.

“I was just thinking,” Antonio replied, a slow, genuine smile spreading across his face, “that the best prescriptions don’t come from medicine. They come from the people who remind you how to live.”
