Chapter 5

Antonio’s breath hitched violently in his throat. He spun around, sweeping the shadows of the room with his eyes, but there was nothing there—only the ghost of a childhood laughter that had been silenced half a decade ago.

Elena rushed into the room seconds later, out of breath and pale with sheer panic.

“Mr. Moretti, I am so, so sorry! I turned my back for one second—”

“Quiet,” Antonio ordered, his voice cracking slightly on the final syllable.

He looked back down at Mia. The little girl crawled over, clutching a small, leather-bound notebook she had pulled from beneath the toy chest. She handed it up to him.

Antonio took it. The handwriting on the cover belonged to his dead wife, Elena—the same name as his new housekeeper, a coincidence that suddenly felt too heavy to bear. Inside the journal were dates, medical records, and medical bills detailing treatments for their son’s chronic heart condition.

Treatment that cost a fortune. Treatment that Antonio’s father had supposedly paid for in full.

Except, according to the final ledger entry dated two weeks before the fatal 'accident,' the money had never arrived from the family vault.
