CHAPTER 1 — "The Burn She Wasn't Allowed to Cry About"

The boiling soup exploded across Diana's wrist.

She bit her lip so hard she tasted blood.

Not a scream.

Not a tear.

Only silence.

Because she already knew what would happen if she made a sound.

"Seriously?" a sharp voice snapped from the dining room. "Can you stop making noise for five minutes?"

Diana closed her eyes.

Seven months pregnant.

Her swollen feet ached so badly she could barely stand.

Her back felt like it was breaking.

Yet she forced herself to lift the heavy pot again.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

She wasn't talking to anyone.

She was talking to the tiny baby growing inside her.

"I'm sorry you have to go through this with me."

Behind her, laughter erupted.

Her husband's younger sister, Vanessa, was hosting another afternoon party.

Four perfectly dressed friends sat around the expensive marble dining table, sipping iced coffee while scrolling through their phones.

Vanessa leaned back on the couch.

"Diana!"

No answer.

"Diana!"

The third time sounded more like an order than a name.

Diana hurried from the kitchen, one hand supporting her pregnant belly.

"Yes?"

"My coffee is warm."

"I... I'll make another one."

"And bring snacks."

Vanessa glanced at Diana's stomach before smirking.

"Try walking faster. Pregnancy isn't a disability."

The room burst into laughter.

One of Vanessa's friends whispered loudly enough for everyone to hear.

"If I looked like that, I'd stay hidden upstairs."

Another added,

"She's basically the live-in maid."

Vanessa smiled proudly.

"No."

"Maids actually get paid."

More laughter.

Diana lowered her head.

She had learned something during the last six months.

Silence hurt less than arguing.

When she married Ethan Carter two years earlier, she believed she had found the safest man in the world.

Kind.

Patient.

Gentle.

But Ethan owned a growing construction company that required him to travel constantly.

Sometimes two weeks.

Sometimes an entire month.

Each time he left, Vanessa's personality changed.

The sweet younger sister disappeared.

In her place stood someone cold, demanding, and strangely resentful.

At first, the requests were small.

Could Diana cook dinner?

Wash a few clothes?

Clean the guest room?

Soon those favors became expectations.

Then commands.

Then humiliation.

By the seventh month of pregnancy, Diana wasn't allowed to rest before midnight.

She cleaned.

Cooked.

Washed dishes.

Scrubbed floors.

Ironed Vanessa's designer clothes.

Massaged her shoulders after shopping trips.

Even polished Vanessa's shoes.

Meanwhile, Vanessa uploaded glamorous photos online with captions that read:

"Self-care day."

"Living my best life."

"Family always spoils me."

No one knew the truth hiding just outside the camera frame.

Least of all Ethan.

Every evening he called.

"How are you, sweetheart?"

Diana smiled through the video chat.

"I'm okay."

"You've been resting?"

"Of course."

"Vanessa helping you?"

Diana hesitated.

Vanessa stood nearby, arms crossed.

Watching.

Smiling.

"I couldn't ask for a better sister."

Vanessa blew her a mocking kiss after the call ended.

"Good girl."

That night Diana cried in the bathroom with the shower running so nobody would hear.

She gently touched her belly.

"I promise...

One day...

We'll leave."

She just didn't know if that day would come before she completely broke.

The next morning started worse.

Diana woke before sunrise to sharp pain twisting through her abdomen.

She froze.

Not contractions...

Just exhaustion.

At least she hoped.

The doctor had warned her only three days earlier.

"Your blood pressure is dangerously high."

"You need complete rest."

"No stress."

"No heavy lifting."

"If you continue like this, you could lose the baby."

Diana remembered every word.

Vanessa ignored every one of them.

When Diana showed her the doctor's note, Vanessa glanced at it for barely two seconds.

Then tossed it into the trash.

"My brother works all day to pay for this house."

"The least you can do is earn your keep."

Before Diana could answer—

Vanessa threw a bucket and mop onto the floor.

"The upstairs hallway is filthy."

"And don't forget the windows."

Diana looked at the bucket.

It weighed almost as much as a suitcase.

"I... I don't think I should carry—"

Vanessa stepped closer.

"You don't think?"

"I wasn't asking."

For one terrifying moment...

Diana bent down anyway.

She reached for the heavy bucket.

And suddenly...

A sharp pain shot through her stomach.

She grabbed the edge of the table before collapsing.

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"Oh please."

"Stop acting."

"My brother falls for those innocent eyes."

"I don't."

Then she turned back toward her guests.

"Drama queen."

The women laughed again.

None of them noticed the tears sliding silently down Diana's face.

Or the tiny drop of blood slowly appearing beneath her sleeve...

...where the boiling soup had burned her skin so badly the blister had burst open.

They also didn't notice something else.

Outside the house...

A black SUV quietly pulled into the driveway nearly six hours earlier than expected.

And inside it...

Ethan Carter smiled as he reached for a bouquet of white lilies.

He couldn't wait to surprise his wife.

May you like

He had no idea...

He was about to witness the worst betrayal of his life.
