CHAPTER 6 — "The Millionaire Who Came Back Too Late"

The old man removed his hat.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

His expensive suit contrasted sharply with the sadness in his eyes.

"My name is William Ashcroft."

His voice was calm.

"I've spent twenty-eight years searching for my daughter."

Vanessa stared at him.

"No..."

William slowly reached into his coat pocket.

He removed an old photograph.

Inside the faded picture...

A young woman held a newborn baby wrapped in a pink blanket.

On the back was a hospital bracelet.

The same hospital.

The same date.

The same identification number found in Vanessa's birth records.

William's hands shook.

"Your mother and I were engaged."

"She disappeared shortly before your birth."

"I searched every hospital."

"Every adoption agency."

"I hired private investigators."

"I never stopped looking."

Vanessa whispered,

"You..."

"...you're my father?"

William nodded, tears filling his eyes.

"I am."

For several long seconds...

Neither of them moved.

Then William slowly opened his arms.

Vanessa collapsed into them, sobbing uncontrollably.

"I'm sorry..."

"I'm so sorry..."

"I didn't know..."

William gently held her.

"I know."

"You were a victim once."

He looked into her eyes.

"But being a victim..."

"...doesn't excuse becoming someone else's tormentor."

Those words struck harder than any slap.

Vanessa broke down completely.

Meanwhile, Detective Harris stepped forward.

"There is something else everyone needs to hear."

He placed several financial documents on the table.

"During the investigation, we discovered repeated transfers from Vanessa's personal account."

The lawyer examined them.

His expression darkened.

"These payments were made to the man who supplied the poison."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

She didn't deny it.

"I was angry."

"I hated Diana."

"I thought Ethan loved her more than he loved me."

"I convinced myself..."

"...if the baby disappeared..."

"...everything would go back to the way it was."

Ethan's voice was ice-cold.

"You weren't trying to get your brother back."

"You were willing to destroy my family."

Vanessa nodded through tears.

"Yes."

"I became a monster."

William quietly stepped away from her.

His face was filled with heartbreak.

"I searched for my daughter for almost three decades."

"I dreamed of this reunion every single day."

He looked at Vanessa with tears in his eyes.

"But today..."

"I met the woman you chose to become."

Police officers stepped forward.

One gently took Vanessa's wrists.

She didn't resist.

As they placed the handcuffs on her...

She turned toward Diana.

For the first time...

There was no pride.

No arrogance.

Only regret.

"I'm sorry."

"I know it changes nothing."

"But if I could trade places with you..."

"I would."

Diana remained silent.

Some wounds healed.

Others became scars forever.

As Vanessa was escorted toward the front door...

A sudden cry echoed through the house.

Diana gasped.

She grabbed her stomach.

"Ethan..."

"The baby..."

Another sharp pain shot through her body.

Water spilled onto the hardwood floor.

The detective looked down.

"The baby's coming!"

Ethan caught Diana before she fell.

Within seconds...

The house descended into chaos once again.

An ambulance was already on its way.

But no one realized...

May you like

The delivery would uncover one final miracle...

One that no doctor, no detective, and no member of the Carter family could have imagined.
