CHAPTER 5 — "The DNA Test That Destroyed an Entire Family"

The room was so quiet that the sound of the paper shaking in Ethan's hands seemed impossibly loud.
"What..."
His voice barely came out.
"...is this?"
The detective looked toward the family lawyer before answering.
"It was recovered during the investigation."
"The envelope wasn't only hiding the poison."
"It also contained documents someone had been trying very hard to keep secret."
Vanessa's breathing became frantic.
"No..."
"No, don't read it."
Ethan ignored her.
His eyes scanned the report.
Then he froze.
The lawyer slowly spoke the words Ethan could no longer say.
"According to the certified DNA analysis..."
"...Vanessa Carter is not the biological daughter of Richard and Eleanor Carter."
The room erupted.
"What?"
"Impossible!"
Vanessa screamed.
"That's a lie!"
"My parents loved me!"
"They raised me!"
The lawyer nodded.
"Yes."
"They raised you."
"But biologically..."
"They were not your parents."
Vanessa staggered backward until she hit the wall.
Her face turned completely white.
"No..."
"There has to be a mistake..."
The detective placed another document on the table.
"There wasn't."
"This wasn't a recent test."
"It was conducted twenty-eight years ago."
Everyone stared.
"Twenty-eight years?"
The detective nodded.
"Your father secretly ordered the DNA test after discovering inconsistencies in hospital records."
"He never told anyone except his attorney."
The family lawyer lowered his head.
"Your father intended to reveal the truth himself."
"But he died before he could."
Vanessa's entire body trembled.
"My father..."
"No..."
"The man who raised me..."
"...knew?"
The lawyer quietly answered,
"He knew."
"And despite everything..."
"He chose to love you as his daughter."
Tears streamed down Vanessa's face.
For the first time...
They weren't tears of manipulation.
They were tears of someone watching the foundation of her entire identity collapse.
But Ethan wasn't looking at Vanessa anymore.
He was staring at another page.
A handwritten letter.
His father's handwriting.
He unfolded it carefully.
"My dear son...
If you're reading this, I may no longer be here.
Never punish Vanessa for how she came into our family.
She was an innocent child.
The guilty person was an adult who lied to all of us.
Protect your sister if she chooses kindness.
But if greed ever controls her heart...
Protect your wife and your children first."
Ethan slowly lowered the letter.
His father had somehow predicted everything.
Years before it happened.
Vanessa dropped to her knees.
"I never knew..."
"I swear..."
"I never knew..."
Diana looked at her quietly.
For one brief moment...
She almost felt sympathy.
Almost.
Then she remembered the burned wrist.
The sleepless nights.
The insults.
The doctor warning that her baby could die.
Compassion could never erase choices.
Vanessa had not chosen where she came from.
But she had chosen cruelty.
And now...
There was still one question nobody had answered.
If Vanessa wasn't Richard Carter's daughter...
Then whose daughter was she?
The detective slowly opened another folder.
"I believe we've identified your biological father."
Before anyone could react—
The front door opened.
An elderly man in his seventies walked inside with the help of a cane.
The moment Vanessa saw his face...
She stopped breathing.
May you like
Because somehow...
She already knew.
