CHAPTER 3 — "The Security Camera Nobody Remembered"

The kitchen fell into a silence so heavy that even the ticking wall clock sounded deafening.
Ethan didn't blink.
His eyes remained fixed on Diana's trembling hands.
He slowly knelt beside her, ignoring everyone else.
"Gently," he whispered.
His fingers carefully lifted her burned wrist.
Fresh blisters.
Old scars.
Tiny cuts.
Bruises along her forearm.
Some were days old.
Others looked weeks old.
His breathing became uneven.
"Diana..."
His voice cracked.
"How long?"
She immediately pulled her hand back.
"It's nothing."
Ethan looked at her as though she had spoken a foreign language.
"Nothing?"
"You've been hurt."
"I'm okay."
"No."
He shook his head.
"You've been pretending to be okay."
Vanessa finally found her voice.
"Ethan, stop being dramatic."
"You don't know what actually happened."
He slowly stood.
For the first time since entering the house...
He looked directly at his sister.
His face showed no anger.
That frightened Vanessa more than if he had shouted.
"What happened?"
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"She dropped the soup."
"She's clumsy."
"She refuses to listen."
"I've been the one taking care of her while you were away."
One of her friends nodded immediately.
"Exactly."
"We've all seen it."
"She's emotional because of pregnancy."
Another added,
"Vanessa barely has time for herself."
"She's exhausted helping Diana."
Diana lowered her eyes.
She knew exactly what would happen next.
Vanessa would cry.
Everyone would believe her.
Just like always.
But Ethan surprised them all.
He smiled.
A cold...
Almost terrifying smile.
"Really?"
Vanessa relaxed slightly.
"Yes."
"I've sacrificed so much."
"I never wanted credit."
Ethan reached into his pocket.
He pulled out his phone.
"I agree."
"You deserve credit."
Vanessa blinked.
"What?"
"For everything."
He tapped the screen.
"Especially..."
"...since I installed a new security system before my last business trip."
The room froze.
Vanessa's face lost all color.
"The cameras."
"I almost forgot about them."
One friend nearly dropped her coffee.
"Cameras?"
Ethan nodded.
"Living room."
"Kitchen."
"Hallway."
"Back entrance."
"Garage."
"Twenty-four-hour recording."
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa forced a laugh.
"Well..."
"Good."
"They'll prove I did nothing wrong."
Ethan looked directly into her eyes.
"I hope so."
Because he already knew something she didn't.
The cameras didn't just record today.
They stored the previous sixty days.
Every single day.
Every single insult.
Every single order.
Every single humiliation.
Everything.
Vanessa suddenly grabbed her purse.
"I just remembered..."
"I have somewhere to be."
Ethan stepped sideways.
Blocking the doorway.
"No."
"You'll stay."
His voice remained calm.
"But after today..."
"You're leaving this house."
Forever.
Twenty minutes later...
The family lawyer arrived.
So did Ethan's longtime business partner, Michael.
And then...
Something happened that none of Vanessa's friends expected.
Ethan connected the home's security system to the enormous television in the living room.
"Let's watch together."
Nobody moved.
The first video appeared.
Monday.
7:12 a.m.
Vanessa threw a basket of laundry onto Diana's arms.
"Hurry up."
Next video.
Tuesday.
Diana struggled to carry groceries.
Vanessa sat scrolling through her phone.
Wednesday.
Diana mopped the floor while holding her aching lower back.
Thursday.
Vanessa deliberately spilled juice.
"Clean it."
Friday.
The doctor visited.
Everyone watched in complete silence as the physician clearly warned:
"Complete bed rest."
"No heavy lifting."
"If she continues like this..."
"...she could lose the baby."
The recording ended.
Only seconds later...
Another clip began.
Vanessa waited until the doctor drove away...
Picked up the medical report...
Tore it into tiny pieces...
And threw them into the trash.
Then she laughed.
"No one's going to tell me what to do."
The room became deathly quiet.
One by one...
Her friends quietly stood up.
Without saying goodbye.
Without looking at Vanessa.
They simply walked toward the front door.
None of them wanted to be associated with what they had just witnessed.
Vanessa suddenly screamed,
"They're edited!"
"This isn't real!"
Michael, Ethan's business partner, calmly answered,
"I manage your brother's security systems."
"The recordings are encrypted."
"They can't be altered."
Vanessa's knees nearly gave out.
But Ethan wasn't finished.
Not even close.
Because there was still one recording...
May you like
The one from this morning.
And it would reveal something far worse than simple cruelty.
