CHAPTER 2 — "The Door Opened... And Every Lie Began to Collapse"

Ethan stepped out of the SUV carrying white lilies in one hand...

...and a tiny pair of baby shoes in the other.

He smiled.

For the first time in months, his meetings had ended early.

He imagined Diana's face lighting up.

Maybe they would finally spend an evening together before the baby arrived.

Maybe they could eat dinner.

Watch a movie.

Talk about names.

Normal things.

Things they hadn't done in weeks.

As he quietly unlocked the front door...

Laughter greeted him.

Not Diana's.

Vanessa's.

He smiled anyway.

At least everyone seemed happy.

Then he heard it.

"Diana!"

A loud clap echoed through the house.

"Where's my lemonade?"

Another voice laughed.

"Maybe the maid quit."

Vanessa answered.

"She wishes."

More laughter.

Ethan frowned.

Maid?

He stepped farther inside without making a sound.

The expensive living room looked like a luxury café.

Half-eaten desserts covered the table.

Designer shopping bags were scattered across the floor.

Five women lounged comfortably...

While somewhere deeper inside the house...

Something heavy crashed.

A pan.

Then a muffled gasp.

Ethan followed the sound.

Every step erased another illusion.

He reached the kitchen doorway...

...and froze.

His pregnant wife was kneeling on the floor.

One hand held her stomach.

The other desperately tried to wipe spilled soup while steam rose around her burned wrist.

Her breathing was uneven.

Her face was pale.

Sweat soaked her hair.

The doctor had ordered bed rest.

Instead...

She was scrubbing the floor on her knees.

Vanessa walked into the kitchen without noticing Ethan standing in the hallway.

She didn't even look at Diana.

"You're still cleaning?"

She kicked the dirty towel across the floor.

"I said the entire kitchen."

Diana whispered weakly,

"I... I feel dizzy..."

Vanessa folded her arms.

"So?"

"You think pregnancy makes you special?"

"My mother worked until the day I was born."

"Stop pretending."

Then...

She picked up a fresh stack of dirty dishes...

...and deliberately dropped them into the sink.

Wash these too."

The crashing sound made Diana flinch.

She struggled to stand.

Halfway up...

Her knees buckled.

She nearly fell.

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

"Unbelievable."

"You're embarrassing."

She raised her hand...

As if she intended to shove Diana aside.

But before she could touch her—

A cold voice filled the kitchen.

"Don't."

Every head turned.

Vanessa's smile vanished instantly.

The bouquet of lilies slipped from Ethan's hand...

Petals scattered across the floor.

His eyes never left Diana.

The burns.

The bruises.

The swollen ankles.

The trembling hands.

The tears she was desperately trying to hide.

In one horrifying second...

He understood everything.

Every "I'm fine."

Every forced smile during their phone calls.

Every excuse.

Every lie she had told...

Not to protect herself.

But to protect him from the truth.

His voice became terrifyingly calm.

"Who..."

"...did this to my wife?"

No one answered.

Not even Vanessa.

For the first time in her life...

She looked afraid.

Because she had just realized something.

The quiet, obedient woman she had bullied for months...

Had never been the one she should have feared.

It was the husband...

May you like

Standing silently in the doorway.

And he had finally seen everything with his own eyes.
