CHAPTER 8 — "The Mother Who Hid Behind the Truth"

Three days later...

The Carter family gathered in a private meeting room at the hospital.

Detective Harris placed a thick case file on the table.

"We've confirmed the supplier's statement."

He looked directly at Ethan.

"Vanessa committed terrible crimes."

"But she didn't create the plan."

Ethan's voice hardened.

"Who did?"

The detective slowly turned toward the door.

"Please come in."

The door opened.

An elegant older woman stepped inside.

Eleanor Carter.

Ethan's mother.

She looked years older than she had only days before.

She didn't deny anything.

Instead...

She quietly sat down.

"I'm tired of lying."

Ethan stared in disbelief.

"Mom..."

The detective laid several bank records on the table.

"The first payment came from an account belonging to Mrs. Eleanor Carter."

William Ashcroft closed his eyes.

He had feared this answer.

Eleanor looked at Diana.

"I told myself I was protecting my family."

"I believed Ethan deserved someone stronger."

"Someone from our social circle."

"I blamed you for changing his life."

Tears rolled down Diana's cheeks.

"I loved your son."

"I never wanted anything else."

Eleanor nodded.

"I know."

"I realized that too late."

She turned toward Ethan.

"When your father died..."

"I became obsessed with protecting the family's reputation."

"I stopped seeing people."

"I only saw control."

She looked toward the nursery window where the newborn baby slept peacefully.

"Then I saw my granddaughter."

"And I understood something."

"No inheritance."

"No reputation."

"No family name..."

"...is worth more than a single innocent child."

The detective stepped forward.

"You'll have the opportunity to explain everything in court."

Eleanor quietly stood.

She didn't resist when the officers approached.

As she reached the doorway, she turned back one last time.

"Diana..."

"I don't expect forgiveness."

"But thank you..."

"...for giving this family the kindness I almost destroyed."

She walked away without another word.

Several months later...

The Carter mansion looked completely different.

The rooms that once echoed with insults now echoed with laughter.

William often visited his granddaughter, bringing storybooks and handmade toys.

He never tried to replace the years he had lost.

He simply cherished every new memory.

One sunny afternoon, Ethan carried his daughter into the kitchen.

Diana smiled as their little girl reached for her mother's finger.

"What should we teach her first?" Ethan asked.

Diana looked at her daughter, then at the sunlight filling the home that had once been so dark.

She smiled.

"That love is never proven by power."

"It's proven by how we protect the people who can't protect themselves."

Outside, spring flowers bloomed where winter had once seemed endless.

The house had not forgotten its painful past.

But it had finally become what Diana had dreamed of from the beginning—

A home.

May you like

Not because it was perfect.

But because the truth had finally been allowed to live there.
