Chapter 14 - The Hidden Ledger"Look at this," I called out, kneeling beside a overturned mahogany desk in the corner of the study. Tucked beneath the baseboard was a thick, leather-bound ledger that had been kicked aside during the ransacking.

Adrian rushed over, pulling me back slightly before picking up the book with a handkerchief. He blew a layer of dust off the cover, revealing embossed gold lettering: Oakhaven Land & Trust Holdings - Master Records.

"This is it," Adrian breathed, flipping open the cover. Inside were handwritten notes, financial wire logs, and signed contracts detailing every property acquisition Julian Vance and Vanessa Vale had planned across the county.

And right there on page forty-two was a detailed entry concerning the land beneath our childhood homes—including the exact legal loophole Vanessa had planned to use to strip ownership away from the families after our wedding.

"She was going to take the entire neighborhood," I whispered, horror washing over me. "The wedding was just her final smoke screen. Once she was legally married to you, she would have had power of attorney over your family estate to sign off on the mass rezoning permits."

Before Adrian could answer, a sharp sound echoed from the hallway behind us—the distinct click of a heavy metal door unlatching in the basement stairs.

Someone was still in the house.
