Chapter 4 - The Altered DoseAdrian froze, his eyes locking onto the manila envelope. The air in the room seemed to freeze. Even the photographers stopped moving, their lenses fixed on the dramatic tableau unfolding beneath the golden chandeliers.

"What did you just say?" Adrian asked, his voice barely above a whisper, his gaze shifting slowly from me back to his wife.

"Nothing! She's lying! She's trying to frame me because she's obsessed with you!" Vanessa scrambled to her feet, her designer heels clicking frantically against the marble as she backed away toward the towering wedding cake at the far end of the hall.

"Let's read the attending physician's addendum from October 14th," I said, stepping forward and opening the envelope. I didn't need to look down at the pages; I had memorized every heartbreaking word during the grueling weeks spent with the district attorney's investigators. "At 4:15 PM, an unauthorized visitor logged into the private wing of St. Jude’s Hospice. The logs show a visitor badge registered under an alias matching Vanessa's corporate pseudonym. Thirty minutes later, the patient's vital signs crashed unexpectedly."

Adrian stepped toward Vanessa, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles were stark white. "You were there? You told me you were at a corporate retreat in Milan that entire weekend."

"I had to be!" Vanessa shrieked, hysteria taking full control of her voice as she realized the trap had snapped shut. "She was going to change her will on Monday! She was going to give the family land and the remaining trust to you and that... that beggar! If she had done that, we wouldn't have had the capital for our firm, we wouldn't have had this life, we wouldn't have had anything!"

The confession hung in the air, loud and clear, picked up by the lapel microphones of the wedding videographers and broadcasted straight to the digital world.

Gasps erupted from the guests. Several of Vanessa’s high-society friends covered their mouths in horror, immediately backing away as if association with her was a contagious disease.
