Chapter 7 - An Unexpected VisitorAdrian pulled the heavy front door open, expecting perhaps a detective with follow-up questions or a reporter tracking down the story of the century. Instead, standing on the porch was a middle-aged woman wearing a sharp legal suit, clutching a leather briefcase.

"Mr. Mercer?" she asked crisply. "My name is Attorney Sarah Lin. I represent the estate and legal holdings of the late Eleanor Mercer."

Adrian blinked in surprise. "My mother's estate? But the probate was closed months ago—or so I was led to believe."

"That is precisely why I am here," Attorney Lin said, stepping into the foyer as Adrian gestured for her to enter. She walked into the living room, where I stood waiting quietly by the doorway.

The lawyer opened her briefcase and pulled out a thick, yellowed envelope sealed with red wax—a seal bearing the personal crest of the old Mercer family notary.

"Before your mother passed away," Attorney Lin explained, looking between Adrian and me, "she anticipated that her estate might be targeted or manipulated. She left strict instructions with our firm that if certain conditions were met—specifically, if the truth regarding her trust came to light under duress—this secondary document was to be unsealed and executed immediately."

Adrian’s breath caught in his throat. "What is it?"

"It's a codicil to her final will," the lawyer said, sliding a crisp piece of parchment across the coffee table. "Your mother left the primary house and family trust split equally between you and Maya. But more importantly, she left a specific contingency clause regarding anyone who attempted to alienate you from your roots."

I walked over and glanced down at the parchment. Written in Eleanor's unmistakable, elegant cursive was a clause that made my heart skip a beat.

“If any individual attempts to sever the bond between my son Adrian and his lifelong companion Maya Bennett through fraud, coercion, or deceit, that individual shall forever forfeit any claim, direct or indirect, to any asset bearing the Mercer name.”

Attorney Lin looked up with a faint, knowing smile. "Vanessa Vale didn't just commit financial fraud; she legally triggered the forfeiture clause. Every single luxury asset, apartment lease, and corporate investment tied to her name through Adrian's past gifts is now legally void and reverting back to the family estate."
