Chapter 2 - The Ghost of ZurichBefore Adrian could open the secondary flap of the cream card, Vanessa lunged forward with a desperation born of pure terror, attempting to snatch the paper from his hands. But Thomas Mercer was faster. The old man, whose health had been failing for years but whose instincts remained razor-sharp, stepped between them and caught Vanessa’s wrist with a grip that made her gasp.

"Enough, Vanessa," Thomas commanded, his deep voice carrying effortlessly across the cavernous room. "Let my son read what is in his hand. Unless, of course, there is something you are desperately afraid he will find out."
Adrian’s eyes darted to his father, then back to the invitation. With trembling fingers, he unfolded the inner panel. Tucked inside was a small, laminated photograph and a folded printout bearing the official letterhead of a private Swiss financial institution—and a timestamp matching the exact week of his mother’s passing.
"What... what is this?" Adrian whispered, reading the line items on the bank statement.
"It's the truth about how your luxury lifestyle was actually funded, Adrian," I answered, stepping back toward the center of the floor, letting the entire room hang on every syllable. "Vanessa didn't come from family wealth. She didn't inherit a boutique consulting firm in Milan. Two years ago, when your mother was in the final stages of her illness, Vanessa gained access to her medical POA. And within forty-eight hours of your mother's heart stopping, one hundred and twenty thousand euros was transferred from her emergency trust into an offshore account registered under a shell company named V. Vale Holdings."
A collective gasp swept through the crowd. Phones were out, recording every second, live-streaming the collapse of the season's most expensive society wedding.
Vanessa’s face turned the color of ash. She stepped back, shaking her head violently, her voice dropping into a venomous hiss. "He's mine. I earned every cent of this life. You were just a pathetic childhood fixture she kept around because she had no one else!"
"She was my sister in every way that mattered," Adrian shouted, his voice finally breaking into a roar of absolute fury. He looked at Vanessa as if he were seeing a total stranger for the very first time. "Every time I asked about Mom's missing estate documents, you told me the lawyers lost them. Every time I mentioned helping Maya fix up her mother's house, you picked a fight until I backed down!"

"Adrian, listen to me—" Vanessa started, reaching out to touch his lapel, her diamond-encrusted wedding bracelet catching the light of the chandeliers.
Adrian slapped her hand away. "Don't touch me."
