Chapter 20 - Forever Begins HereOne year to the day after the disastrous wedding reception, the backyard of the Mercer home was filled with laughter, soft music, and the warm glow of string lights woven through the branches of the old oak tree.

There were no massive corporate guest lists, no secret offshore bank accounts, and no cameras broadcasting our lives to a cynical world. There were only seventy people who mattered—loyal neighbors, dear friends, and Thomas Mercer standing proudly at the center as he raised his crystal glass.

I wore a simple, elegant ivory dress that belonged to no seasonal haute couture trend, and carried my mother's old leather bag resting safely on a side chair, its vintage clasp catching the warm golden sunlight.

As Adrian took my hands in his beneath the canopy of leaves, the string quartet struck up a familiar, gentle melody.

"No confusion this time," Adrian whispered, looking down into my eyes with a love that had stood the test of three decades.

"Never," I smiled, leaning into his embrace as the applause of our family filled the warm evening air.
