Chapter 13 - The Shadow at the Gates
Midnight at the Reed estate was supposed to be impenetrable.
Four distinct biometric checkpoints, twenty-four-hour thermal imaging drones patrolling the perimeter walls, and twelve armed guards stationed at every strategic access point. To the rest of the city, the mansion was a fortress guarded by a private army.
Yet, on a moonless night, a single figure walked silently along the outer brick wall of the estate.
The intruder didn't trigger the motion sensors. They didn't disrupt the thermal grid. Wearing a heavy dark cloak that blended seamlessly into the shadows of the overgrown oak trees, the figure reached the northern perimeter wall—the exact spot where Julian’s black town car had parked months ago.
With preternatural agility, the figure scaled the twelve-foot iron fence, dropping silently onto the manicured lawn inside.
Inside the central monitoring room, Marcus stared at the wall of high-definition monitors. His eyes scanned the multi-split grid of infrared feeds, looking for any anomaly. Everything was green. Everything was secure.
Suddenly, monitor twelve—the feed covering the rear rose garden—flickered.
Marcus leaned closer, narrowing his eyes. The screen showed a brief distortion, like a ripple in water. A shadow detached itself from the rose bushes and moved toward the servants' entrance at the back of the mansion.
"Unit Four, check the rear garden sector," Marcus ordered into his wrist communicator, his hand dropping instinctively to the holster beneath his suit jacket.
There was no immediate response from the guard.
"Unit Four, report," Marcus repeated, his voice dropping an octave as a cold prickle of adrenaline ran down his spine.

Static hissed through the earpiece. Then, a wet, heavy thud echoed over the radio frequency—followed by absolute silence.
Marcus stood up so violently his chair tipped backward, crashing against the console. He drew his firearm, his heart hammering against his ribs. Something was inside the perimeter. And it had just eliminated an armed patrol in less than ten seconds.
