Chapter 9 - The Genesis of the War

The wind outside the lighthouse roared like a caged beast, but inside, the silence was absolute.

Alexander stood frozen, the old leather journal clutched in his trembling hand like a live grenade. The pieces of a puzzle he had never even known existed suddenly slammed into place with terrifying clarity.

"Explain," Alexander commanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous, deadly whisper. "Every word. Right now."

Arthur swallowed hard, taking a slow step toward an old wooden crate to sit down. "Thirty-five years ago, Richard Vance was a rising star in the shipping industry, but his family was broke and tied to dangerous syndicates. He fell in love with Evelyn Parker—a brilliant young legal scholar who helped him build his first corporate contracts. They married in secret. You were born a year later."

"If that's true," Alexander interrupted, his eyes burning with fierce disbelief, "why did we live in poverty? Why did my mother raise me in a shack while Richard built an empire?"

"Because Richard’s father—Julian’s grandfather—forced a brutal choice," Arthur explained, staring at his hands. "He threatened to kill Evelyn and you if Richard didn't annul the secret marriage and marry into the Sterling banking dynasty to secure funding for Vance Global. Richard was a coward. He chose the money."

Alexander’s grip on his pistol tightened until his knuckles turned pure white. "He abandoned us."

"Not completely," Arthur corrected quietly. "He set up a secret trust fund in Evelyn’s name—a multi-billion-dollar endowment hidden across multiple offshore accounts, designed to be unlocked only when you turned forty, or when Vance Global went into default."

The revelation hit Alexander like a physical blow. That was why Julian Vance had targeted his family. That was why Julian had spent years trying to ruin them. Julian didn't just hate Alexander as a corporate rival; he knew that Alexander was his half-brother—and the legitimate heir to fifty percent of Vance Global.

"Julian found out about the trust fund two years ago," Arthur continued. "When he realized his father had left half the empire to the son he abandoned, he went insane. He hired Victoria Lane to infiltrate your life, find your mother, and pressure her into signing away her rights to the trust before you discovered the truth."

"And when my mother refused..." Alexander finished, his voice trembling with a rage so profound it transcended anger. "...he tried to have her killed."

"Julian ordered the hit," Arthur confessed, bowing his head. "Victoria wasn't just acting out of malice; she had a signed contract promising her fifty million dollars from Julian’s personal accounts once the trust was transferred."

Alexander stood in the center of the damp, freezing lighthouse, the weight of his entire existence shifting beneath his feet. Everything he thought he knew—his struggles, his drive, his hatred for the wealthy elite—was built on a foundation of lies and corporate bloodshed.

He slowly lowered his pistol, sliding it back into its holster.

"Where is Julian right now?" Alexander asked.

"He’s not in his penthouse," Arthur said, looking up with grim certainty. "He’s at the main corporate vault at Vance Global headquarters. He’s trying to wipe the master ledger clean before federal agents seize the physical servers tonight."

Alexander turned on his heel, walking back toward the heavy iron door of the lighthouse without looking back.

"Marcus," Alexander spoke into his lapel communicator as the cold sea air hit him.

"Sir? I'm listening," Marcus's voice crackled through the static.

"Scramble the private jet. Notify the federal prosecutor that we have the physical master ledger of Vance Global." Alexander paused, his eyes hardening as he stared out into the dark, stormy horizon. "And tell the team we're going to finish the family business tonight."
