Chapter 3 - The Shadow Partner

By midnight, Alexander Reed was no longer a grieving, protective son. He was the apex predator of the city's financial sector.

He sat in his private home office on the third floor, a cavernous room lined with mahogany bookshelves and three massive monitors glowing with live data streams. The room was pitch black except for the cold blue light reflecting off his hard, unblinking eyes.

Marcus stood rigidly by the door, holding a thick manila folder.

"You were right, sir," Marcus said without preamble. "I dug into Victoria Lane’s financial history for the past twenty-four hours. On paper, she was an aspiring fashion model with a modest apartment in the East District. But two years ago, her accounts experienced a massive, unexplained liquidity injection."

Alexander didn't look away from his monitors. "How much?"

"Five million dollars in clean, untraceable wire transfers," Marcus replied, flipping open the folder. "And the source wasn't a bank. It was a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands called Vanguard Holdings."

Alexander’s fingers tapped rhythmically against the edge of his mahogany desk. Vanguard Holdings. The name wasn't just familiar; it was the exact investment vehicle used by his lifelong business rival, Julian Vance.

Julian Vance. The heir to Vance Global, a multi-billion-dollar shipping and logistics conglomerate that had been locked in a bitter, trillion-dollar war with Reed Enterprises for dominance over the Pacific shipping lanes.

"Julian," Alexander murmured, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. "He didn't just plant a spy in my house. He planted a live grenade."

"It gets worse, sir," Marcus continued, his voice dropping an octave. "According to our hotel surveillance logs and mobile tower pings, Victoria Lane met with Julian Vance’s personal secretary, Arthur Pendelton, three times last week at a private suite in the Grand Meridian Hotel. And..." Marcus hesitated.

"And what, Marcus?" Alexander snapped, his patience wearing thin.

"And fifty thousand dollars was transferred from Victoria’s personal checking account to a private medical clinic in Zurich just four hours before she arrived at your mansion today."

Alexander stood up so fast his leather chair rolled back and slammed against the bookshelf. "A clinic in Zurich? What kind of clinic?"

"A specialized psychiatric and memory-care facility," Marcus said grimly. "The same facility where your mother’s older sister, Aunt Beatrice, has been living for the past five years under an anonymous benefactor's care."

The air in the room turned to ice.

Alexander stared at his head guard, his chest heaving. "Julian didn't just target me. He targeted my family's history. He was using Victoria to dig up dirt on my mother's past to use against me in the upcoming shareholder proxy vote next month."

"Worse than that, sir," Marcus said, stepping forward and placing a single printed photograph on the desk. "Look at this."

It was a screenshot from the security camera feed outside Evelyn’s hometown cottage three days ago. A sleek black town car—registered directly to Vance Global—was parked fifty yards down the gravel road. Standing by the car, talking to a local grocer, was Julian Vance himself.

Alexander stared at the photograph, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the desk. The betrayal wasn't just professional anymore; it was deeply, violently personal. Julian had crossed a line that no amount of corporate maneuvering could erase. He had touched his mother.

"Get the legal team on the phone," Alexander ordered, his voice cold, steady, and terrifyingly calm. "I want an emergency injunction frozen against every single asset Vance Global holds in the tri-state area by 8:00 AM."

"And Victoria Lane, sir?" Marcus asked.

"Leave her in the holding cell," Alexander said, turning back to his monitors where the stock tickers for Vance Global were just beginning to open for Asian trading. "Let her rot for a night. Tomorrow, we’re going to pay Julian a little visit at his corporate headquarters. And we’re going to bring the whole house down on his head."
