Chapter 15 - The Voice in the Dark

Inside the panic room, the air was cool and sterile. Alexander stood before the master console, his fingers flying across the keyboard to override the disabled camera systems, his face carved from cold stone.
"Marcus, check the feed for the ground floor," Alexander ordered, his voice dangerously steady.
Marcus tapped the secondary monitor, bringing up the infrared hallway cameras. The screen flickered, grain settling over the image like digital static.
In the center of the hallway outside the panic room, standing directly beneath the lens of the overhead camera, was a tall figure cloaked in black. The intruder didn't try to hide their face anymore. They slowly reached up, pulled back the heavy hood, and stared directly into the camera lens.
It wasn't Julian Vance. It wasn't an assassin hired from the underworld.
It was a woman with silver-streaked hair, sharp, aristocratic cheekbones, and cold, calculating eyes that mirrored Alexander's own.
Alexander froze, staring at the screen in absolute disbelief.
"Elena Vance," Alexander whispered, the name escaping his lips like a curse. Julian’s mother. The matriarch of the Vance dynasty, whom the corporate world had believed died in a private plane crash twenty years ago.
Suddenly, the audio feed crackled to life, filling the panic room with a smooth, chillingly polite voice that echoed through the hidden speakers.
"Hello, my dear stepson," Elena Vance’s voice purred through the intercom, sounding as though she were sitting across a tea table rather than standing outside a tomb. "Did you really think Julian was the only monster your father created?"
Alexander stepped up to the audio console, pressing the broadcast button. His voice vibrated with lethal fury. "You're dead. The board announced your death two decades ago."
"A convenient fiction, Alexander," Elena replied smoothly, her footsteps echoing on the hardwood floor outside as she paced back and forth before the panic room door. "When a woman discovers her husband has spent a decade secretly married to a domestic worker and fathered a bastard heir, she doesn't commit suicide. She simply... reorganizes her priorities."
"What do you want?" Alexander demanded, his hand resting on the grip of his pistol. "Julian is in federal prison. Vance Global is under my control. You have nothing left."
"I have everything that matters," Elena laughed softly—a cold, brittle sound. "You think my son was running the family business? Julian was a spoiled child playing with matches. I built the alliances. I funded the offshore accounts. And I am the one who ordered Victoria Lane to push that old woman down your stairs."
Alexander’s vision went red. The memory of his mother lying on the marble floor, bleeding near the staircase, flashed before his eyes with blinding intensity.
"You..." Alexander growled, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the console. "You touch her again, and I will hunt you to the ends of the earth."
"She's not here, Alexander," Elena said, her tone suddenly dropping its playful facade, turning sharp and razor-thin. "Check your phone."
Alexander’s hand shot into his pocket, pulling out his secure satellite phone. The screen flashed with an incoming encrypted video call from an unknown number.
With shaking fingers, he pressed accept.
The screen illuminated. It didn't show an empty room or a dark hallway. It showed Evelyn Parker sitting calmly in her rocking chair on the porch of her suburban cottage, drinking her green tea.

Standing directly behind her, holding the cold steel barrel of a suppressed pistol against the base of her skull, was a man in a black tactical vest.
And looking directly into the camera from the side of the screen was Elena Vance, smiling like a predator who had finally cornered its prey.
