Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

Back at the mansion, the atmosphere was finally beginning to warm up.
Evelyn Parker sat in her favorite rocking chair by the bay window in the solarium, a warm cup of herbal tea resting between her hands. Her left arm was still in a sling, but the color had returned to her cheeks, and her eyes held their familiar, sharp warmth.
Alexander walked in quietly, pulling up a small stool to sit beside her. He didn't say anything for a long time, just watching the sunlight dance across the marble floor—the very same floor where, just a few days ago, his world had almost ended.
"Julian Vance was stripped of his title this morning," Alexander finally said, breaking the silence. "The board voted unanimously to restructure the company under Reed Enterprises management. He’s facing federal indictment on twelve counts of corporate fraud."
Evelyn took a slow sip of her tea, her gaze fixed on the blooming rose garden outside. "And the girl?"
"Twenty-five years in federal custody," Alexander replied evenly. "No parole for the first fifteen."
Evelyn didn't smile. She didn't look triumphant. She simply set her teacup down on the saucer with a soft, gentle clink.
"You think this fixes everything, don't you, Alex?" she asked softly.
Alexander looked at her, surprised. "What do you mean? They tried to destroy us. I destroyed them back."
"You fought the world, my boy, like you always do," Evelyn said, turning her wise, tired eyes toward him. "You built walls higher, you hired more guards, you bought out your enemies. But you still haven't answered the real question."
"What question?"
"Why were you so lonely in the first place?" Evelyn asked, her voice piercing straight through his corporate armor. "Why did you bring a woman like Victoria into this house when every instinct you had told you she was hollow?"
Alexander looked away, his jaw tightening. He stared at the marble floor, the silence stretching between them like an uncrossable chasm.
"Because I thought having everything meant I didn't need anyone," Alexander confessed, the words tasting bitter in his mouth. "I thought if I was strong enough, rich enough, untouchable enough... I wouldn't ever have to feel vulnerable again."
Evelyn reached out with her good hand, her warm fingers resting gently against his cheek.

"Vulnerability isn't a weakness, Alex," she whispered. "It's the only way to let real love in. I raised you alone in a shack with holes in the roof, but we had each other. Here, you have a palace with holes in the heart."
Alexander closed his eyes, leaning into his mother's touch for the first time in years, feeling the heavy burden of his empire finally begin to lift.
