Chapter 18 - The Last Tea

Three days later, the rain had cleared, leaving the city washed in crisp, golden autumn sunlight.
Inside the small suburban cottage, the air smelled of freshly baked bread and brewed jasmine tea. Evelyn sat at her wooden kitchen table, her hands resting peacefully over her teacup as the afternoon light danced across the checkered tablecloth.
The front door opened softly, and Alexander stepped inside. He had taken off his suit jacket, rolling up his sleeves, looking less like a ruthless corporate billionaire and more like the boy who used to sit by her side thirty years ago.
He pulled out the wooden chair opposite her and sat down without a word.
Evelyn poured a second cup of tea, sliding it across the table toward him.
"Elena Vance is being transferred to a maximum-security federal penitentiary," Alexander said quietly, breaking the silence. "Her assets have been fully seized. The Vance dynasty... is officially over."
Evelyn took a slow sip of her tea, her gaze warm and discerning. "And how does that feel, my boy? Do you feel safe now?"
Alexander looked down at the steaming cup of tea, watching his own reflection ripple on the surface. For years, he had believed that safety meant power. He had believed that if he grew strong enough, rich enough, and untouchable enough, no one would ever be able to hurt the people he loved.
Yet, standing in the ruins of the railway station watching Elena get dragged away, he had realized something fundamental.
"I don't think safety is about building walls anymore, Mom," Alexander confessed, looking up to meet her eyes. "It's about knowing who you're standing with when the walls come down."

Evelyn smiled—a soft, radiant smile that reached all the way to her eyes. She reached across the small wooden table, placing her calloused hand over his massive, powerful palm.
"You finally learned the most important lesson your wealth couldn't buy," she whispered.
