Chapter 2 - Shadows in the PenthouseAlex pulled the heavy iron hatch shut a split second before the blast detonated outside, shaking the concrete walls of the service shaft. Darkness swallowed them, illuminated only by the red emergency strips lining the metal ladder.

"Hold onto my neck, boys," Alex ordered, slinging Noah onto his back and carrying Lucas under his left arm. "We’re going up."
He climbed the vertical ladder with frantic strength, ignoring the violent pull in his old surgical scars. His mind raced with terrifying clarity. Julian Sterling had sat at his thanksgiving dinner table for seven years. Julian had patted his shoulder, offered condolences for his lost fertility, and managed the international investments of Sterling Industries while Alex poured his life into software. It had all been an elaborate trap to keep Alex distracted, childless, and isolated while Julian drained the family empire.
They emerged on the 42nd floor through a private access panel behind the penthouse library. The penthouse was quiet, wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass offering a panoramic view of a stormy Manhattan skyline.
Alex locked the biometric doors and rushed the boys into his secure vault office. He set them down on the velvet sofa, his hands shaking as he checked them for injuries.
"Are you hurt? Either of you?"
"We're okay," Lucas panted, clutching his small backpack. "Mama gave us these vests before the men came." He pulled open his navy jacket to reveal a Kevlar child-sized chest guard tucked beneath his sweater. "She said Manhattan was dangerous."
Alex felt a lump form in his throat. Elena had been living in hiding, running a quiet, terrifying war to keep their children safe while he lived in ignorant luxury.
"Why does your uncle want to hurt us, Daddy?" Noah asked softly, his lower lip trembling.
"He doesn't want you to exist, Noah," Alex said, crouching down to their eye level. "Because as long as I had no children, my uncle inherited everything if I died. But now... you two change everything."
Suddenly, the massive television monitor on the wall clicked on automatically. The screen flickered with static before settling on a high-definition video feed of a dark room.
Bound to a wooden chair in the center of the frame was Elena Vance. Her face was bruised, her lip split, but her eyes burned with ferocious defiance. Standing behind her, wearing an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, was Julian Sterling.
"Hello, Nephew," Julian’s voice smooth as silk streamed through the speakers. "I see my welcome committee downstairs failed to retrieve my grand-nephews. Impressive reflexes for a man who spent seven years believing he was broken."
"Julian," Alex whispered, his knuckles turning white as he stepped between the screen and the boys. "If you lay one finger on her, I will tear you apart piece by piece."
Julian laughed softly, pouring himself a glass of scotch on the video feed. "You always were too sentimental, Alex. Just like your father. You think this is about money? About Sterling Tower? No. Your father and Elena’s father created the Genesis Strand—a bio-encryption code capable of controlling the world’s most advanced automated defense networks. They hid the master key inside the non-coding DNA sequence of your biological offspring."
Julian leaned down, grabbing Elena by her hair and pulling her head back. She winced but refused to scream.
"Don't give them anything, Alex!" Elena shouted into the camera. "The boys carry the sequence! If Julian gets their blood, he controls—"
A guard slapped her across the face, cutting her off. Julian smiled coldly at the camera.

"You have six hours, Alex. Bring the twins to the abandoned shipping terminal at Pier 42. If you call the police, or if you bring security, I put a bullet in Elena’s head and broadcast it live to every news channel in America. See you soon, Daddy."
The screen went black.
