Chapter 4 - Ambush at Pier 42Midnight fell over Manhattan as heavy fog rolled off the Hudson River, blanketing Pier 42 in a ghostly, silver haze. The massive, rusting shipping warehouse at the end of the pier loomed like a dark monster.

Inside a modified, bulletproof SUV parked three blocks away, Alex double-checked the boys' thermal tracking wristbands.

"Stay inside this vehicle with Uncle Marcus," Alex told Lucas and Noah, looking deeply into their eyes. "The doors are locked with biometric steel plates. No one can get in from the outside. If anything goes wrong, Marcus will drive you straight to a safe house in Connecticut."

"Daddy, don't go alone," Noah pleaded, his small fingers tightening around Alex's sleeve. "What if the bad man hurts you?"

Alex smiled, reaching out to gently trace the star-shaped birthmark on Noah’s neck—the exact twin of his own. "Your mama spent seven years keeping you safe. It's my turn now. I'm not going anywhere, Noah. We're a family now."

Alex kissed both boys on the forehead, stepped out of the vehicle into the freezing rain, and closed the reinforced door.

Marcus looked at Alex through the open driver's window. "I have three snipers set up on the old crane structure. Once you walk through those doors, you have ten minutes before Julian realizes the DNA sample you're carrying is synthetic. Make them count."

Alex nodded, pulling his collar up against the wind, and walked into the dark, cavernous warehouse.

The air inside smelled of rot, salt, and diesel. Floodlights snapped on suddenly, blinding Alex as he stepped into the central aisle. Dozens of armed mercenaries lined the elevated catwalks above, their rifle scopes shining red against the mist.

In the middle of the floor, Elena was tied to a steel pillar, her face pale, blood dripping from her lip. Beside her stood Julian Sterling, holding a military-grade handheld DNA sequencer.

"You came alone, Alex," Julian said, his voice echoing loudly in the steel structure. "How tragic. But where are my precious grand-nephews? Did you really think you could show up empty-handed?"

"I brought what you wanted, Julian," Alex said clearly, reaching into his coat and pulling out a pressurized biometric vial filled with a clear synthetic fluid. "The boys are safe, miles away from here. This is a fresh blood extraction. Everything you need to unlock the Genesis Strand is right here."

Julian’s eyes gleamed with greasy greed. He gestured to one of his guards, who stepped forward, snatched the vial from Alex's hand, and delivered it to Julian.

"Check it," Julian ordered.

The guard slotted the vial into the handheld sequencer. A blue digital bar began loading across the screen: ANALYZING GENETIC MARKERS... 45%... 70%...

Elena looked up at Alex, her eyes wide with terror. "Alex... what did you do? You shouldn't have come!"

"I promised the boys I'd bring you home, Elena," Alex said softly.

Suddenly, the sequencer beeped violently. A flashing red screen appeared: CRITICAL SYSTEM ERROR. CORRUPT SEQUENCE DETECTED.

Julian’s face twisted into an expression of pure rage. He smashed the sequencer onto the concrete floor. "A decoy! You dare play games with me?!"

Julian drew a suppressed pistol from his jacket and aimed it directly at Elena’s head. "If I can't have the key, Nephew, you get to watch the mother of your children die right now!"

"Now, Marcus!" Alex screamed.
