Chapter 3 - The Board of GhostsBy noon the following day, rumors of the "Hole Massacre" had spread through the facility like wildfire. Kate had not only survived solitary; she had systematically dismantled the prison’s fiercest enforcers without taking a single scratch.

Warden Thomas sat in his glass-walled office, his hands trembling as he poured himself a glass of bourbon. Standing across from him was Deputy Warden Marcus, a retired military man who looked visibly pale.

"Sir, the warden’s board is demanding answers," Marcus said, dropping a thick red folder on the desk. "Her intake papers are completely forged. Her fingerprints don't exist in the national database. Every time I try to run her facial recognition through federal servers, my terminal gets locked down by Defense Department protocols!"

Thomas took a heavy quaff of his drink. "Because she isn't a prisoner, Marcus. She's an apex predator."

"Then why is she here?!" Marcus demanded.

Thomas leaned forward, his face hollow. "Three years ago, an elite undercover operative infiltrated the international cartel running human trafficking through our private prison network. She uncovered evidence pointing straight to the State Governor. Before she could expose it, her family was assassinated, and she vanished."

Marcus’s eyes widened. "Kate?"

"She let herself get arrested," Thomas whispered, looking out his office window down into the yard where Kate was walking undisturbed. The inmates were parting like the Red Sea, dropping their eyes, terrified to make contact. "She didn't come here to serve time. She came here because this prison is the bank where the Governor keeps the master ledger."

Down in the yard, Kate walked up to Vera, who was sitting at a concrete bench, surrounded by her top lieutenants. For the first time, Vera looked genuinely terrified.

"I gave you the warning," Vera said quickly, leaning back. "I owe you nothing."

Kate slid onto the bench opposite her. "You owe me the location of the safe."

Vera froze. "What safe?"

May you like

Kate leaned in, her voice dropping to a terrifying register. "The safe beneath the Warden’s office. The one holding the encrypted drive marked Elysium. You have twenty-four hours to give me the blueprints, Vera. Or I start cleaning house, starting with you."

Chapter 3 Hook: Vera watched Kate walk away, realizing that the real monster in the prison wasn't the system—it was the girl in the pristine white shoes.
