Chapter 8 - The Final ReckoningWarden Thomas panicked, firing his last round into the sky as Kate closed the distance in a fraction of a second. She swept his legs out, sent his gun flying off the roof edge, and pinned him to the gravel with her foot pressed hard against his neck.

"Please!" Thomas choked out, staring up into the face of his executioner. "I was just following orders! Vance forced me! He has everything!"

Kate pulled a small silver USB drive hanging from a chain around his neck—the physical master key containing the biometric encryption codes to Governor Vance’s financial networks.

"You had a choice, Thomas," Kate said quietly.

She reached down, grabbed him by the collar, and hauled him toward the roof door just as a fleet of federal law enforcement helicopters broke through the smoke clouds above the prison!

Siren lights flooded the rooftop in brilliant blue and red hues. Loudspeakers boomed from the lead federal chopper: "THIS IS THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION. WARDEN THOMAS, STAND DOWN IMMEDIATELY!"

Kate threw Thomas onto the concrete at the feet of the landing FBI tactical team.

Three weeks later.

The news was broadcast across every major television network worldwide.

"In an unprecedented federal raid, Governor Richard Vance was arrested this morning on charges of high treason, human trafficking, and corporate murder. The evidence, provided by an anonymous whistle-blower known only as 'Agent Nemesis,' has completely dismantled the multi-billion-dollar illegal prison network..."

In a quiet suburban airport on the other side of the country, a sleek black private jet waited on the tarmac.

Kate stepped out of an unmarked vehicle, wearing a clean, tailored civilian coat. Vera was standing near the boarding stairs, holding a small duffel bag containing her new legal identity papers provided by federal witness protection.

Vera looked at Kate with deep respect. "So... it's over. You brought them all down."

"It's never really over," Kate replied softly, looking out toward the horizon. "Systems like that always try to rebuild."

Vera smiled, glancing down at Kate’s feet.

Kate was wearing a brand-new, immaculate pair of pristine white sneakers.

"You know," Vera chuckled, shaking her head. "When Vanessa tried to take those shoes from you on your first day, nobody understood why you fought so hard for them."

Kate looked down at her shoes, a faint, rare smile touching her lips.

"They weren't just shoes, Vera," Kate whispered, her voice carrying a chilling mystery that gave Vera goosebumps.

"Inside the heel of the left sneaker was the original micro-tracker that led me straight to the Warden. I didn't get sent to that prison to serve time..."

Kate turned, stepped onto the jet stairs, and looked back one last time.

"...I let them arrest me because it was the only way to deliver the package."

The jet doors closed, roaring into the blue sky, leaving behind a shattered empire and a legend that the inmates of Cell Block B would whisper about for decades to come.

THE END
