Chapter 7 - Fire and IronThe countdown hit three minutes. The temperature inside the administrative corridor was rising rapidly as fuel lines in the basement were forcibly ruptured by the computer system.
Kate didn't panic. She smashed the glass of the main server rack with her bare fist, tearing out the core fiber-optic lines. Using the exposed high-voltage cables, she sparked a controlled short circuit directly into the electronic door locks, causing the magnetic seals to blow out with a shower of sparks!
The door swung open.
Kate sprinted through the burning hallways, down the central stairwell, diving straight into the flooding basement where the inmates were trapped behind sealed emergency grates.
Women were screaming, banging on the heavy iron bars as black smoke filled the lower chambers. Vera was frantically trying to pry the lock open with a steel bar, her hands bleeding.
"STAND BACK!" Kate shouted, her voice cutting through the deafening roar of the fire alarms.
Kate grabbed a discarded high-pressure hydraulic jack left behind by the maintenance crew. She jammed the jaws between the reinforced steel bars of the emergency gate. Pushing her physical limits, she pumped the lever with terrifying force.
CREAK... SNAP!
The heavy steel bars bent out of shape, creating a gap just wide enough for a human to pass.
"GO! EVERYONE OUT THROUGH THE SERVICE TUNNEL!" Kate ordered, hauling inmates through the gap one by one.
Vera grabbed Kate’s arm as she slid through. "What about you?! The whole facility is going to blow!"
"Warden Thomas is still in the building," Kate said, her eyes flashing with lethal intent. "And he has the physical encryption key on his person."
Without waiting for a response, Kate turned and sprinted back into the burning inferno, chasing the man who had orchestrated the nightmare.
She caught up to Warden Thomas at the helipad access door on the roof. The wind whipped violently as a private helicopter hovered above, lowering a rescue ladder.
Thomas turned, pulling a heavy-caliber sidearm from his jacket, firing wildly!

Chapter 7 Hook: Kate ducked behind a ventilation unit as a bullet grazed her arm. Blood soaked through her sleeve, but as she stepped back into the open, her eyes were no longer those of a human—they were those of a relentless reaper.
