Chapter 1

The music pounded across the backyard as laughter, splashing water, and excited chatter filled the air around nearly two hundred teenagers celebrating our eighteenth birthday.
Then a sharp burst of microphone feedback silenced everything.
At the edge of the pool stood my twin sister, Chloe.
She looked as though she had stepped straight out of a fashion campaign.
Her bright pink bikini, flawless makeup, and effortless confidence drew every eye toward her.
Every phone was already pointed in her direction.
I stood across the patio.
Underneath my thick white bathrobe, I wore the very same bikini.
No one knew.
For twelve years, I had hidden my body beneath oversized clothes, long sleeves, and heavy fabrics, even in the middle of summer.
The scorching heat didn't bother me.
The fear did.
“Maya!” Chloe called brightly into the microphone, smiling as if she were about to tell an innocent joke.
Every conversation stopped.
Hundreds of faces turned toward me.
“You've been hiding under that robe all afternoon,” she announced. “You're making everyone uncomfortable.”
A few people laughed.
Chloe slowly pointed at me, her smile sharpening into something cruel.
“We agreed we'd match today, didn't we?”
“So stop hiding.”
“Take off the robe and jump into the pool.”
“Or are you too embarrassed to let everyone see what you've been covering up?”
One of her closest friends began clapping.
Slowly.
Mockingly.
Another joined in.
Within seconds, the entire backyard echoed with the same cruel chant.
“Take it off!”
“Take it off!”
“Take it off!”
To everyone watching, it was nothing more than entertainment.
They assumed I was simply insecure.
None of them knew I hadn't shown my arms or shoulders in public since I was six years old.
Through the glass doors leading into the house, I noticed my father gripping the handle.
He looked ready to rush outside and end everything.
I met his eyes.
Then gave the smallest shake of my head.
No.
Not today.
The truth had stayed buried long enough.
I slowly walked toward the center of the patio.
Every step felt heavier than the last.
Around me, dozens of phones remained raised, recording what everyone expected would become the most humiliating moment of my life.
They had no idea they were about to witness something entirely different.
I stopped a few feet in front of Chloe.
She smiled with complete confidence.
She believed she had already won.
Without saying a word, I untied the belt around my robe.
The knot loosened.
The fabric slipped from my shoulders...
...and settled silently onto the stone beside my feet.
A wave of shocked gasps swept across the yard.
Someone dropped a drink.
The glass exploded against the pool deck.
The chanting ended instantly.
Every laugh disappeared.
Every camera remained frozen in place.
No one said a word.
Because the scars covering my shoulders, chest, arms, and back told a story none of them had ever imagined.

And that story was about to change every life at the party.
(Part 2 reveals how Maya received those devastating scars, why Chloe owes her life to the sister she tried to humiliate, and the family secret that leaves every guest wishing they had never joined in the laughter. Comment "YES" if you're ready for the next chapter!
