Chapter 5 - The Inheritance ClauseThe party was completely dead. The music had stopped playing entirely—someone inside the house had finally had the sense to kill the Bluetooth speaker.

Dozens of teenagers began quietly gathering their bags, whispering among themselves, casting terrified, sidelong glances at Chloe as if interacting with her might somehow contaminate them. Within five minutes, the mass exodus began. Cars started firing up in the driveway, tires crunching on gravel as the crowd fled the scene of the most catastrophic social execution in our town's history.
Chloe remained on her knees by the edge of the pool, utterly broken. Her friends had abandoned her first, walking past her without a single word of comfort.
My father walked slowly across the patio. He stopped a few feet away from me, looking down at my scars with a gaze full of profound sorrow and long-overdue regret.
"Maya..." he began, his voice cracking. "I... I should have stopped her years ago. I let her rule this house because I was terrified of breaking what was left of us."
"You didn't protect the right twin, Dad," I said, my voice devoid of anger, which somehow made it hurt worse.
I reached down, picked up my thick white bathrobe from the stone, and slipped my arms back into the sleeves. I tied the belt tightly around my waist, hiding the scars from view once more—not out of shame, but because I didn't owe those walls, or anyone else, another second of my vulnerability.
As I turned to walk toward the house, a sharp, cold voice sliced through the twilight.
"You think you won, don't you?"
Chloe forced herself up from the ground. Her mascara was smeared across her cheeks, her pink bikini looked ridiculous against the backdrop of her ruined social standing, but her eyes held a sudden, venomous spark of pure malice.
"You think exposing me ruins my life?" she laughed hysterically, wiping her face with the back of her hand. "You absolute fool, Maya. Do you have any idea what today actually is?"
I paused, looking back over my shoulder.
"Today isn't just our eighteenth birthday," Chloe hissed, a twisted smile breaking through her tears. "Today is the exact day the trust fund activates. The trust fund our grandfather left us."
My father’s face drained of what little color remained. "Chloe... stop it."
"No, Dad! Let her know!" Chloe shouted, stepping toward me with a manic glint in her eye. "Grandpa’s will was very specific. The entire estate, the house, the family company shares, and the multi-million dollar trust split—it all goes to whichever twin maintains legal and financial custodianship of the primary family asset."
She gestured wildly to the massive estate surrounding us.
"And according to the documents signed by Dad last week, I am the primary executor of the estate until we turn twenty-one, unless..." Chloe’s smile widened into something truly demonic. "Unless one of us is legally declared mentally unstable or a danger to herself."

She pulled her phone out of her pocket with shaking fingers, tapping furiously on the screen.
"I already filed the emergency psychiatric evaluation petition this morning," Chloe declared triumphantly, holding up her phone like a weapon. "With your history of severe trauma, self-isolation, and sudden public outbursts, the court-appointed evaluator is already reviewing your file. By midnight, Maya, you won't just be humiliated—you'll be legally committed, and I’ll inherit everything."
