Chapter 3 - The Locked DoorThe temperature in the backyard seemed to drop twenty degrees.

The guests were frozen, transfixed by the chilling accusation hanging in the air. Several teenagers lowered their phones entirely, their expressions shifting from morbid curiosity to outright horror.

"Maya, stop," Chloe choked out, her hands flying up as if to physically push the words away. "Don't... don't do this."

"Why not?" I asked, tilting my head. "You're the one who wanted an audience. You wanted everyone to judge me based on what I look like underneath. But if we're going to put my body on display, let's talk about how it got this way."

I took another step toward her, the scars catching the light of the sinking sun.

"When the fire started, the smoke filled the upstairs hallway in seconds," I told the crowd, my voice dropping to a low, hypnotic register that commanded absolute silence. "Chloe and I were locked in our shared bedroom. The door handle was already melting. The heat was suffocating."

I pointed a finger straight at my sister.

"Chloe panicked. She was six years old, terrified, and screaming. She found the heavy antique dresser in our room, pushed it against the door, and jammed it shut because she thought the monsters outside the door would get in if she opened it."

A sharp intake of breath echoed through the crowd.

"She trapped us both inside a burning room," I continued, feeling the ghost of that suffocating heat wash over me all over again. "The fire ate through the walls, feeding on the carpet, crawling up the curtains. The room became an oven. The air was pure poison."

I looked directly at our classmates, many of whom had grown up alongside us, completely unaware of the dark undercurrent of our family history.

"If someone didn't break that door down, we would have both burned to ash in five minutes," I said. "And someone did break it down. Our father managed to smash through the window from the outside, climbing up the trellis through a wall of flame."

I turned my eyes back to Chloe, who was now shaking so violently she looked like she might collapse onto the stone pavers.

"He grabbed the first child he could reach through the thick black smoke," I whispered. "He grabbed Chloe. He pulled her out to safety, tossing her into the grass below just as the ceiling collapsed."

I raised my arms, letting the grotesque, melted skin of my shoulders and chest catch the light.

"And me? I wasn't at the window. I was trapped behind the heavy wooden dresser Chloe had shoved against the door. To reach me, my father had to clear the burning debris, but the ceiling joist gave way. A sheet of burning drywall fell directly on top of me, pinning me to the floor."

I stepped right up until I was inches from Chloe’s face.

"Instead of running out with the father who had just saved her, Chloe stood at the edge of the burning room," I said softly, so only she could hear every agonizing syllable—though the high-end microphone clipped to her dress broadcasted every word to the entire yard. "And do you know what she yelled down the stairs to our dad while I was burning alive underneath that beam?"

Chloe squeezed her eyes shut, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. "Stop... please, Maya... stop..."

"She screamed," I said, looking out over the stunned, horrified crowd, "'Leave her! Save me! She’s ugly anyway! Let her burn!'"
