Chapter 6 - The Trap Springs BackThe backyard fell into an entirely new kind of silence—one charged with legal treachery and cold, calculated malice.

Chloe stood chest puffed out, her tears instantly drying as she basked in the safety of her final, desperate contingency plan. She truly believed she had outsmarted everyone. She thought her little emergency petition was an impenetrable shield that would instantly neutralize my truth-bomb and lock me away before I could claim a single dime of our grandfather's inheritance.
My father staggered backward, gripping the back of a patio chair for support. "Chloe... you filed a psychiatric hold against your own sister? On our birthday?!"
"I had to protect my future, Dad!" she snapped defensively, her voice dripping with venom. "She just destroyed my entire life out there! Look at what she did! No one will ever look at me the same way again! My friends are blocking me, my reputation is garbage, and it's all because of her pathetic, burnt-up pity party!"
She turned her venomous glare back onto me, stepping closer.
"So enjoy your little moment of truth, Maya," Chloe sneered, waving her phone in my face. "Because by tonight, men in white coats are going to haul you out of this house in a straightjacket. You'll spend the next three years in a psych ward while I sign away your share of the estate and leave you with nothing."
I didn't flinch. I didn't yell.
I simply reached into the deep pocket of my white bathrobe, pulled out my own phone, unlocked it, and tapped a single green icon.
"You know, Chloe," I said calmly, my voice steady as a rock, "you always were brilliant at manipulation. But you were terrible at checking who else was listening on the speaker line."
I pressed play.
Out of my phone’s tiny speaker, crystal-clear and amplified by the quiet evening air, came a recording of a phone call made thirty minutes before the party started:
“Hi, this is Chloe Vance. I need to file an emergency psychiatric evaluation petition for my twin sister, Maya Vance... Yes, I know it's her birthday, but she's completely unstable... No, she hasn't actually done anything dangerous, I just want to claim she's a threat to herself so I can lock down our grandfather's trust fund before she can access it... Can you fast-track the paperwork? Great, I'll pay the expedited fee using Dad's corporate credit card.”
The color drained from Chloe's face so fast she looked like a ghost. The phone slipped from her trembling fingers, clattering uselessly against the stone patio.
"W-what... how did you..." Chloe stammered, her knees buckling again.
"You left your iPad open on the kitchen island this morning while you were upstairs curling your hair," I said smoothly, sliding my phone back into my pocket. "It synced with your phone calls. I got the alert the second you submitted the fraudulent petition."
I took a step toward her, towering over her crouching form.
"And it gets better, Chloe. Because when you used Dad's corporate credit card to pay the expedited legal fee, you triggered an automated fraud alert on his phone."

I glanced past her toward our father, who was slowly straightening up, a cold, furious storm gathering in his eyes.
"Dad didn't just hear you threaten me just now," I said softly. "He spent the last twenty minutes forwarding your lovely voicemail confession directly to our grandfather's estate attorney, along with the complete medical and police logs from the night of the fire twelve years ago."
