Chapter 2 - The Fire That Forged UsThe silence that blanketed the backyard was so profound that you could hear the distant hum of traffic on the highway two blocks away.

For six long seconds, no one dared to breathe.
The phones—dozens of them, held aloft by classmates, neighbors, and family friends—remained pointed at me. But the digital screens weren't capturing a viral moment of teenage humiliation anymore. They were capturing a nightmare etched directly into human skin.
My skin.
Jagged, thick, hypertrophic scars twisted across my left shoulder, snaked down my upper arm, and webbed across my collarbone like a grotesque spider’s web. They were silver and purple, raised and puckered, a stark, terrifying roadmap of third-degree burns that had completely destroyed my natural tissue.
Chloe’s triumphant smirk didn't just vanish; it shattered. Her mouth stayed slightly open, her eyes wide with a sudden, suffocating panic. She had expected to expose my insecurities, to make me cry and run away in tears while her friends laughed. She had never, ever expected me to actually drop the robe.
I didn't cower. I didn't pull my arms across my chest to hide. I stood tall, letting the late-afternoon sun hit the ruined landscape of my body for the very first time in public.
"Take a good look, everyone," my voice cut through the quiet, steady and cold as ice. "Because Chloe is right. I’ve been hiding this monster for twelve years."
I turned slowly, ensuring every single person in the crowd could see the horrific extent of the damage. My gaze locked onto Chloe, whose face had gone chalk-white.
"These scars," I continued, stepping closer to her until she instinctively took a step back, "are the exact reason my sister is still alive today."
A collective murmur rippled through the crowd. Whispers erupted like static electricity.
What does she mean? What happened to her? Was it a fire?
"Maya..." Chloe whispered, her voice trembling, stripped of all its venom. For the first time in her life, she looked terrified of me. Not because I was weak, but because she knew what secrets I held the power to unleash.
"You wanted everyone to see the real me, Chloe," I said, my voice ringing out clearly over the silent pool deck. "Well, let's tell them the whole story. Let's tell them what happened twelve years ago, on the night of our sixth birthday, when our parents were away, and the babysitter fell asleep with a lit cigarette downstairs."

Through the sliding glass door, I saw my father close his eyes, a tear finally breaking free and tracking down his weathered cheek.
"Let's tell them how the living room went up in flames," I said, my eyes locked on Chloe's trembling form. "And let's tell them who locked the door from the inside."
