Chapter 11 - The Phantom Threat

Five years had passed since the night Claire Sterling walked out of the Austin mansion with a single navy suitcase. In that time, Sterling Meridian Capital had grown into an international financial titan, controlling over $2 billion in global real estate assets. Claire was featured on the cover of Forbes as one of the most powerful corporate leaders in the world.
Her life was peaceful, anchored by her thriving company and her five-year-old daughter, Lily, whom she raised in their serene Napa Valley estate.
Then, on a crisp Tuesday morning in London, the peace shattered.
Arthur Pendelton rushed into Claire’s hotel suite holding a encrypted tablet. "Claire, we have an emergency. A mysterious offshore hedge fund named 'Aegis Global' just acquired twenty-nine percent of Sterling Meridian’s publicly traded stock in a series of stealth dark-pool transactions."
Claire set down her coffee cup, her eyes narrowing. "Twenty-nine percent? That’s just below the legal threshold for an automatic takeover bid. Who owns Aegis Global?"
"That's the terrifying part," Arthur whispered, his face pale. "I ran the corporate registration through Panama and Switzerland. The beneficial owner is listed under a trust established thirty years ago by a man who died bankrupt."
"Who?" Claire demanded.
"Richard Rowan," Arthur said softly. "Evan’s father."
Claire stood up, her heart pounding against her ribs. Richard Rowan had been dead for over two decades. His firm had been saved from collapse by her late father, Harrison Sterling.
"How can a dead man buy thirty percent of my company, Arthur?" Claire asked coldly.

"Someone is using his dormant legal trust," Arthur replied, his hands trembling. "And whoever it is, they just formally petitioned the SEC for a special meeting of the board to strip you of your executive veto."
Someone was using a dead man's memory to stage a hostile takeover of her empire—and they knew every single loop-hole in the original charter.
