Chapter 5 - The Mastermind Unveiled

Evan’s blood ran cold. He stared at the photographs, his breath catching in his throat.
"Mom..." Evan turned slowly toward Margaret, his voice shaking with a terrifying realization. "What... what is this?"
Margaret’s eyes darted frantically. "Evan... that's... that's nothing! It's a setup! A Photoshop!"
"You were meeting with Marcus Vance six months ago?!" Evan screamed, the photos shaking in his hand. "Before Leah even told me she was pregnant! Before I even started transferring the money!"
"Listen to me, Evan!" Margaret panicked, clutching his arm. "I did it for you! I did it for the family!"
"WHAT DID YOU DO?!"
The truth, rotting under the surface for months, finally burst wide open.
Six months ago, Margaret had discovered Evan’s secret fertility report in the house safe. Realizing her son was infertile and that the Rowan bloodline would end with him, she panicked. Her entire social standing, her identity among Austin's elite, was built on the myth of the "Rowan Dynasty."
Desperate for an heir, Margaret had secretly approached Marcus Vance—a long-time associate from her youth—seeking a solution. Marcus, recognizing an opportunity to destroy Rowan Meridian from within, offered a devil’s bargain: he provided Leah Mason, a master manipulator on his payroll, to seduce Evan. When Leah got pregnant with Marcus’s biological child (via IVF arranged by Vance’s doctors), Margaret agreed to play along, pretending the twins were Evan's miraculously conceived heirs!
In exchange, Margaret had agreed to help Vance quietly acquire non-voting shares of Rowan Meridian behind Evan’s back!
Evan fell back against the concrete wall, tears spilling down his cheeks as the horrific truth settled into his brain.
His wife hadn't betrayed him. His enemy hadn't just outsmarted him.
His own mother had orchestrated his ultimate humiliation.
"You..." Evan whispered, staring at Margaret as if she were a monster. "You traded my life... my marriage... my company... just so you could hold a fake grandchild and parade around town?"
"Evan, I had to!" Margaret cried, trying to grab his hand. "Claire was never going to give us an heir! She was too focused on business! I needed a boy to carry the Rowan name!"
"THEY AREN'T ROWANS!" Evan shrieked, striking the concrete wall with his fist until his knuckles bled. "THEY ARE VANCE'S CHILDREN! YOU BROUGHT MARCUS VANCE'S CHILDREN INTO MY HOUSE!"
"Evan, please—"
"Get away from me!" Evan yelled, shoving his mother back. "GET AWAY FROM ME!"
At that moment, two black police cruisers with flashing lights pulled into the underground garage. Four armed federal agents stepped out, led by a female prosecutor carrying an arrest warrant.
"Evan Rowan?" the lead agent called out.
Evan stood motionless, his spirit completely extinguished. "Yes."
"You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and tax evasion," the officer stated, walking forward and pulling out handcuffs. "You have the right to remain silent..."

As the cold steel snapped around Evan’s wrists, he didn't fight. He didn't scream. He looked up toward the elevator bank that led to the top floor—to Claire’s office.
Through the reinforced glass of the upper parking level, he saw a solitary figure standing by the window. Claire was watching him go, her expression serene, untouched, and unbothered.
