Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

At 9:00 AM the following morning, the top floor of the Rowan Meridian Tower was dead silent.
Evan arrived wearing the same suit from the night before, his eyes bloodshot, his hair disheveled. Margaret walked beside him, clutching her crocodile-skin handbag like a weapon. They had spent the entire night trying to reach Leah, but she had vanished into thin air, taking the babies and turning off her phone.
"Don't worry, Evan," Margaret hissed under her breath as they approached the boardroom doors. "We still hold the executive authority. We will fire Claire from her compliance role, publicly discredit her, and push the expansion deal through. Vance can't touch us if we close the Dallas merger today."
Evan nodded numbly, but a heavy stone sat in his stomach.
When Evan pushed open the heavy oak doors of the main boardroom, he stopped dead in his tracks.
Sitting at the head of the massive glass conference table was not the board of directors. Sitting there was Claire, dressed in a sharp, tailored ivory suit, her dark hair swept back flawlessly. Surrounding her were five senior partners from the state's most formidable corporate law firm, alongside Arthur Pendelton.
At the opposite end of the table sat Marcus Vance himself, wearing a triumphant smile and sipping espresso.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Margaret demanded, stepping forward aggressively. "This is a private executive session! Vance, get out of my building before I have security throw you out!"
Marcus Vance let out a smooth, deep laugh. "Mrs. Rowan, I suggest you lower your tone. I am sitting here as an invited guest of the majority shareholder."
Evan’s head snapped toward Claire. "Claire... what are you doing? What is he doing here?"
Claire didn't look at Evan. She casually opened a leather ledger in front of her.
"Evan Rowan," Claire began, her voice crisp and echoing off the glass walls. "As of 8:00 AM today, an emergency meeting of the voting shareholders was convened. Under Article 4 of the Rowan Meridian Trust Charter established by my father, Harrison Vance Sterling, the holder of Class A voting shares possesses sole authority to remove executive officers in the event of gross negligence or financial fraud."
"Gross negligence?!" Margaret exploded. "Evan built this company!"
"Evan didn't build a damn thing," Claire replied coldly, looking up for the first time. Her eyes locked onto Evan’s terrified face. "For the past three years, Evan has been siphoning corporate development funds into a shell company called 'Mason Consulting LLC'."
Evan went pale. "Claire, wait—"
"A total of $14.2 million was transferred," Claire continued, turning a page. "Disguised as legal advisory fees. In reality, those funds were used to buy a luxury penthouse in downtown Austin, lease three sports cars, and fund non-disclosure agreements to cover up various personal liaisons. Including your secretary, Leah Mason."
The board members who had slunk into the side seats gasped.
"That's corporate embezzlement, Evan," Claire said softly. "A federal felony."
"You... you can't prove that!" Evan stammered, his voice trembling violently.
"I don't need to prove it to you," Claire said. "I've already provided the encrypted financial ledgers to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Department of Justice."
Margaret rushed to the table, slamming her hands down. "You bitch! You’re destroying your husband! You’re destroying our family name!"
"Your family name was destroyed the moment you thought an $80 million check could buy my dignity," Claire replied smoothly. She turned her eyes to Arthur. "Proceed with the vote."
Arthur stood up. "By virtue of controlling fifty-one percent of the total voting stock, Claire Sterling-Rowan hereby votes to immediately terminate Evan Rowan as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, effective immediately."
"Seconded," Marcus Vance spoke up, raising his hand with a wicked grin. "As the owner of twenty percent of non-voting shares purchased on the open market this morning... I fully support the motion."
Evan stumbled backward, hitting the wall. "Marcus... you bastard... Leah was working for you..."
Marcus smiled warmly. "Leah is a very talented contractor, Evan. She delivered exactly what I paid her for: total destruction of your personal and professional stability. And those twin boys? Beautiful kids. They look just like my youngest brother."

Evan let out a strangled cry and lunged toward Marcus, but two imposing security guards immediately stepped in front of him, pinning his arms behind his back.
"Get him out of my boardroom," Claire ordered quietly.
