Chapter 2 - The Paternity Trap

The heavy iron gates of the Rowan estate closed behind Claire’s black sedan. Sitting in the back seat, she pulled out her phone and dialed a private number.

"It's done, Arthur," Claire said calmly.

On the other end of the line, Arthur Pendelton, her father’s long-time trust attorney and corporate counsel, let out a deep sigh. "How did he take it?"

"He dropped to his knees," Claire replied, looking out the window as the Austin skyline shimmered in the distance. "He finally read the report."

"And the mother-in-law?"

"She tried to buy my exit with eighty million dollars of company capital," Claire said with a dry chuckle. "Capital she doesn't even know is currently frozen."

"Excellent," Arthur said, his voice tightening with professional rigor. "I've already filed the emergency injunction with the Delaware Chancery Court. By 8:00 AM tomorrow, Evan’s executive authority at Rowan Meridian will be suspended pending a full audit. But Claire... do you know who the real father of those twins is?"

Claire’s eyes hardened. "I have my suspicions. Leah didn't just target Evan for his money. She was planted."

"Planted by whom?"

"Marcus Vance," Claire stated coldly.

Marcus Vance was the ruthless CEO of Vance Capital, Rowan Meridian’s fiercest competitor in the Texas commercial real estate market. For three years, Vance had been trying to launch a hostile takeover of Rowan Meridian, but Claire had repeatedly blocked his maneuvers.

"If Leah is Vance’s asset," Arthur mused, "then those children..."

"Are Vance's leverage," Claire finished. "Evan thought he was playing the alpha male, securing an heir while replacing his wife. In reality, he opened the front door and handed the keys to our enemy."

Meanwhile, back at the Rowan mansion, absolute war had broken out.

Margaret was screaming at Leah, her aristocratic demeanor completely shattered. "You deceptive, scheming little parasite! You brought another man's bastards into my house and claimed they were Rowans?!"

"Stop touching me!" Leah shrieked back, backing into the kitchen while cradling the crying infants. "Evan was the one who pursued me! He wanted an heir so badly he believed everything I said! He never even asked for a DNA test during the pregnancy!"

Evan sat at the dining table, his head buried in his hands, rocking back and forth. His entire reality had inverted. For twelve years, he had secretly resented Claire, believing her inability to conceive was a flaw on her end. He had used that hidden resentment to justify his arrogance, his affairs, and his eventual betrayal.

And now, the truth was out: he was the one who was infertile. His arrogance was built on a lie. His pride was a delusion.

"Where are you going?!" Margaret yelled as Leah suddenly made a dash toward the front door with the babies.

"I'm leaving!" Leah yelled, tears streaming down her face. "You people are insane!"

"You're not going anywhere until a court-ordered blood sample is taken!" Evan barked, springing up from his seat. He lunged forward and grabbed Leah’s arm. "Who did you sleep with, Leah?! Who is the father?!"

Leah yanked her arm free, her face suddenly morphing from fearful mistress to cold, mocking strategist.

"You really want to know, Evan?" Leah sneered, wiping a tear from her cheek. "You really want to know who the real man is?"

Evan stared at her, terrified of the answer.

Leah leaned in close, her eyes filled with venomous amusement. "A real man doesn't need his wife to build his company for him. Marcus sends his regards."

Evan felt as if the room had run out of oxygen. "Marcus... Vance?"

"He paid for the penthouse, Evan. He paid for my doctors," Leah whispered, leaning close so Margaret couldn't hear. "And in twelve hours, he’s going to own your entire company."
