Chapter 18 - The Reckoning

In a fit of pure madness, Arthur pulled a compact, concealed pistol from his coat pocket and grabbed Claire, pulling her against his chest and aiming the barrel at her temple!

"BACK OFF!" Arthur screamed at the Swiss officers, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "BACK OFF OR I’LL BLOW HER HEAD OFF! I'M NOT GOING TO PRISON!"

The Swiss officers drew their weapons, but couldn't get a clear shot without risking Claire’s life.

Claire didn't scream. She didn't panic. She stood rigid, her breathing steady, staring at the reflection in the dark window glass.

Suddenly, a tall figure stepped out from the hallway shadows behind Arthur.

It was Evan.

He had insisted on accompanying the federal transport team to Switzerland to ensure Arthur faced justice.

"Arthur," Evan said softly, stepping into the dim light of the lounge.

Arthur whirled slightly, keeping the gun pressed to Claire’s head. "Evan?! You fool! Stay back or I’ll kill her!"

"You ruined my life, Arthur," Evan said, walking forward slowly, completely unarmed, his arms raised open. "You made me a monster. You made me lose the only woman who ever loved me. But you will NOT take her life too."

"I'm your father!" Arthur roared, tears of rage in his eyes. "I did all of this for us!"

"You did it for yourself," Evan replied coldly.

In a fraction of a second, Evan lunged forward, grabbing Arthur’s wrist and shoving the gun upward toward the ceiling!

BANG!

A gunshot echoed deafeningly through the lounge, shattering the glass chandelier above.

Claire broke free and dropped to the floor as Swiss federal agents rushed forward. Evan wrestled Arthur to the ground, disarming him completely before the officers pinned Arthur down, snapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

Arthur lay on the floor, weeping and screaming curses, as he was dragged away into the night.

Evan sat on the marble floor, gasping for air, clutching a superficial burn mark on his shoulder where the gunshot had grazed him.

Claire walked over and knelt beside him. She pulled a silk scarf from her pocket and pressed it gently against his wounded shoulder.

"Why did you do that, Evan?" Claire asked softly.

May you like

Evan looked up at her, his eyes clear of vanity, clear of pride, filled only with deep, quiet remorse.

"Because twelve years ago, you saved my life," Evan whispered softly. "And tonight... I finally repaid my debt."
